About The Position

Specialist II Environmental Biochemist – Environmental, Health, Safety & Security (EHS&S) Position Summary: Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, core hours 8am-5pm 100% on-site (Madison, WI) Catalent, Inc. is a leading global Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization (CDMO). Located in Madison, WI, this facility features advanced mammalian cell line engineering and biomanufacturing capabilities using single-use systems to support scalable production. This 263,000 sq. ft. Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) facility offers integrated formulation and analytical services to address complex development challenges in Biologics. The EHS&S team is the driving force behind keeping the Madison site safe, secure, and fully compliant across biochemical safety, environmental regulations, and worker health. As an EHS&S Specialist II, you will partner with every department to embed biochemical safety practices directly into day‑to‑day operations. In this pivotal role, you will lead key compliance efforts, maintain critical safety and security programs, and play a major part in strengthening the site's overall resilience.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s (B.S./B.A.) degree minimum is required plus a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience. We will also accept a Master’s (M.S./M.A.) degree with 3+ years The degree should be in EHS&S, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, or related discipline
  • Must have full understanding of OSHA/EPA compliance including stormwater, wastewater, RCRA, CAA, CWA, air emissions
  • Must have experience managing risk assessments, PPE, industrial safety, Industrial Hygiene, auditing, and training/implementing EHS processes
  • Individual must be able to see, hear, read, and write clear English. Frequent sitting, standing, walking, reading of written documents and use of computer monitor screen, reaching with hands and arms, talking, writing, listening. Occasional stooping, kneeling, crouching, bending, carrying, grasping. Frequent lifting and/or moving up to 20 pounds and occasional lifting and/or moving up to 50 pounds. Must comply with EHS responsibilities. Lab work may involve irritants, electrical equipment, sharp instruments, toxic materials, hazardous waste. Clean room gowning required.

Nice To Haves

  • Relevant professional certifications (ASP, CSP, CIH) is a plus
  • Relevant experience is considered as: OSHA reporting requirements, conducting risk assessments (Functional, Chemical, Ergonomics), GMP regulations, hazardous waste management, regulatory agency interaction, and familiarity with ISO 45001 implementation

Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with OSHA standards designed to minimize employee exposure to hazardous biochemicals in the facility
  • Identify biochemical molecules as particularly hazardous substances (PHS), and specify handling and containment requirements, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Assist in executing an effective EHS&S program that meets all regulatory requirements. Draft necessary SOPs covering EHS&S-related activities
  • Provide training on EHS&S procedures and policies. Develop and update biochemical risk assessments
  • Partner with departments to coordinate the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) program. Lead Safety Committee meetings and audits. Lead development of metrics for audit response
  • Implement Continuous Improvement projects. Ensure contractor EHS&S compliance. Conduct environmental incident reporting
  • Other duties as assigned
