About The Position

Advanced Missile Propulsion & Technologies (AMPT) is seeking an Aerothermal & Fluids Analysis Engineer to contribute to the development and execution of air-breathing hypersonic programs. The role addresses complex technical challenges using advanced engineering principles, theories, and concepts to perform computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solutions, engine performance modeling, and thermal analysis for supersonic combustion and hypersonic vehicles. The engineer uses commercial and proprietary codes and high-fidelity models, communicates with internal teams and external customers, and helps develop designs from concept through detailed design. The position also supports component and systems testing and contributes to products from internal research and development through production. Duties may include pre- and post-test analysis of ramjet/scramjet engines for model validation and post-test data reduction. Travel is 10%, typically in support of testing. The ability to obtain a U.S. Secret Security Clearance is required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering and at least 4 years of relevant experience; alternatively, a graduate degree and at least 2 years of related experience; or, in lieu of a degree, at least 8 years of related experience.
  • Ability to obtain a U.S. Secret Security Clearance.
  • Strong skills applying fluid dynamics and heat transfer to propulsion systems.
  • Ability to analyze large amounts of data and identify and quantify patterns within and between datasets, using AI where applicable.
  • Familiarity with CFD++, ANSYS, Pointwise, Thermal Desktop, Python, and Matlab.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including PowerPoint, Word, and Excel.

Nice To Haves

  • Active U.S. Secret Clearance.
  • Knowledge and experience with air-breathing, high-speed propulsion systems used in defense applications.
  • Experience working within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Understanding of the function and design of actively cooled rocket engines and turbomachinery.
  • Hands-on experience in a flow-testing environment; testing liquid- or solid-fueled ramjet engines is a plus.
  • Familiarity with CAD software tools such as CREO or Siemens-NX.

Responsibilities

  • Provide analysis using commercial and proprietary codes with high-fidelity models.
  • Communicate effectively with internal stakeholders, including program offices and chief engineers, and with external customers.
  • Drive designs from conceptual phases through detailed design, participate in component and systems testing, and contribute to products from the IRAD phase through production.
  • Perform detailed computational fluid dynamics for performance modeling and thermal boundary-condition generation.
  • Perform finite element method analysis for detailed thermal analysis to determine material survivability and provide temperatures for structural analysis.
  • Provide pre- and post-test analysis of ramjet/scramjet engines for model validation and post-test data reduction, as duties require.
  • Travel in support of testing, approximately 10%.
