About The Position

The Prince George’s County Office of Finance is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill a Senior Tax Collection Specialist, (Accounting Technician) grade G17 position, in the Treasury Division. This position is responsible for administering and managing a variety of tax programs and accounts with a high degree of independence. Key duties include maintaining and adjusting Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILOT) accounts, coordinating approvals, and ensuring accurate processing of payments. The role oversees the collection, auditing, and reporting of multiple tax types—including telecommunications, hotel/motel and short-term rental, energy, and heavy equipment taxes—while maintaining detailed records and automated tracking systems. Responsibilities also include monitoring delinquent accounts, conducting vendor outreach, preparing regular financial and status reports, and ensuring compliance with applicable policies and procedures. Additionally, the position manages real and personal property tax account adjustments, reconciles discrepancies with relevant agencies, establishes and updates accounts, and processes tax credits and rebates, including auditing eligibility and coordinating disbursements.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree from an accredited College or University in bookkeeping, accounting or financial management.
  • Three (3) years of experience providing support to an accounting or budget office performing bookkeeping, financial or accounting work within an automated accounting system; including at least two (2) years in the lead/supervisory role.
  • An equivalent combination of education, experience and training which provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
  • Please note there is no equivalency for the required supervisory experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum of one year of accounting experience, including creating journal entries and understanding their impact, within a governmental or similarly complex organization.
  • Proficiency with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems such as SAP.
  • Strong independent problem-solving abilities and proven capacity to manage multiple concurrent projects.
  • Experience in reviewing and interpreting legislation and/or other complex documents.
  • Proficiency in Excel, including formulas, data organization, and spreadsheet management.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Verify tax calculations and ensure accuracy of gross receipt tax returns.
  • Verify accuracy of accounts with state-issued adjustments and Public Utilities reports.
  • Record and audit ticket data promptly, resolving discrepancies with the Assessor’s Office.
  • Create and update accounts in the Treasury system with accurate jurisdictional details.
  • Prepare deposits with supporting documentation and submit it for approval within established deadlines.
  • Update and maintain spreadsheets and ledger records with a high level of accuracy.
  • Initiate follow-up on delinquent accounts promptly upon delinquency.
  • Monitor delinquent accounts and complete delinquency reporting monthly.
  • Conduct follow-up calls and vendor outreach within three days as needed.
  • Ensure all rates and collection forms are current and up to date.
  • Prepare payment requests within 45 days following the end of each quarter.
  • Complete monthly status reports within ten days of month-end.
  • Complete quarterly collection status reports within ten days of quarter-end.
  • Provide annual tax rates to Budget and distribute to vendors as required.
  • Prepare and distribute taxpayer statements for gross receipts.
  • Prepare and submit annual reports on tax credit activity in compliance with deadlines.
  • Ensure annual programs are administered within established timeframes and escalate delays as needed.
  • Update procedures within six months of any changes.
  • Coordinate file merges with OIT within required timeframes.
  • Maintain organized files to ensure easy retrieval and compliance.
