This role is responsible for assisting the classroom teacher in delivering instruction and implementing Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals and objectives for students with special needs. The assistant ensures student safety, facilitates independence, social awareness, language development, and appropriate behavior. This includes implementing behavior support plans, assisting with curriculum accommodations and modifications, and collecting data. The role also involves participating in relevant training and carrying out other assigned duties such as supervising students during lunch or on the playground, providing personal care support (toileting, self-care), and performing clerical tasks as directed by the classroom teacher, program principal, or executive director. Candidates must be able to work with students exhibiting significantly challenging behavior and possess the physical mobility to assist students with physical needs, personal care, and behavioral challenges. This includes frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and the ability to lift, push, pull, and/or carry up to 40-50 pounds occasionally, as well as moving quickly between standing and kneeling positions without using hands. Physical restraint of students may be required in situations involving risk of serious and imminent harm. Candidates must maintain emotional control under stress. SEEM will provide training for de-escalation and physical intervention. Employment is contingent upon passing a SAFIS fingerprint and CORI screening.
