The Special Education Teaching Assistant works under the direct supervision of the special education teacher and under the broad supervision of the building principal. This role involves providing assistance to students to help them develop independence, carrying out lessons, adapting academic programming, and following behavioral plans. The assistant also helps maintain a functional classroom environment, assists with clerical tasks, promotes responsible behaviors and social interactions, and maintains classroom routines when the teacher is absent. Responsibilities extend to providing programs off school property, recording data, participating in meetings, and monitoring student needs and behaviors at all times. The assistant must also maintain confidentiality, use TCI techniques including de-escalation and therapeutic restraint, and provide for special needs of individual students such as lifting, hygiene, medical, and restroom assistance.
