About The Position

The Children’s Center of Hamden is seeking a dedicated Special Education Teacher for our Whitney Hall School program. In this role, you’ll provide high-quality instruction in a special education environment, design individualized education plans (IEPs), and support students with diverse learning needs. You’ll collaborate with treatment teams, families, and outside agencies to ensure each student receives the academic and emotional support they need to succeed. Why Join Us? Requirements

  • Holds or is immediately eligible to obtain Connecticut Special Education Certification (#165, #265, or #065).
  • If not certified, eligibility for a Durational Shortage Area Permit (DSAP) will be considered.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or related field required
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, implement, and adapt instruction for diverse learners.
  • Strong knowledge of IEP development, compliance, and special education laws.
  • Excellent classroom management and student engagement skills.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with families and interdisciplinary teams.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver instructional activities tailored to students’ individual needs and IEP goals.
  • Assess academic strengths and challenges to guide instruction.
  • Teach core academic subjects (English, Math, Language Arts, Science, Health, Reading, Social Studies, Life Skills).
  • Prepare and implement IEPs, quarterly benchmarks, and progress reports.
  • Ensure compliance with PPT recommendations, IEP timelines, and state/federal special education regulations.
  • Create a safe, structured, and engaging classroom environment through consistent routines and positive behavior support.
  • Collaborate with paraprofessionals, related service providers, and the treatment team.
  • Participate in PPTs, case conferences, treatment team meetings, and staff development.
  • Maintain accurate records, substitute plans, and timely reports.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity and cultural awareness with all students and families.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support program success.
