About The Position

The Special Education Teacher within the Adapted Recreation & Fine Arts Complex plans, organizes, and implements educational and transition services that support individuals with disabilities in achieving meaningful employment and post-secondary outcomes. This position plays a key role in the development and implementation of transitional programs within the community, designed to prepare participants for competitive integrated employment through workplace internships, career exploration, and individualized skill development. The Special Education Teacher evaluates each participant's academic, functional, vocational, and transition needs and collaborates with participants, families, employers, and interdisciplinary team members to support successful transition outcomes. Instruction is delivered in classroom, community, and workplace settings, emphasizing employment readiness, independent living skills, self-advocacy, and career development.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in special education.
  • 3+ years of experience working with young adults with cognitive and/or physical disabilities in an educational classroom setting.
  • Teaching Certificate for Severe-Profound and/or Mild-Moderate

  • Experience and/or emphasis in Secondary Transition Education.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and monitor individualized educational and transition services by conducting vocational and transition assessments; developing internship/career plans; measuring participant progress; and ensuring compliance with applicable documentation requirements.
  • Lead the implementation of transitional programs by providing classroom and workplace-based instruction focused on employability skills, career readiness, self-determination, communication, problem-solving, workplace professionalism, and successful transition to post-secondary education, training, and competitive integrated employment.
  • Coordinate and support participant success in internship and employment settings by identifying accommodations and workplace supports, monitoring internship performance and measurable skill gains, facilitating employment planning meetings, supervising training supports, addressing barriers to employment, maintaining program outcome data, and supporting job placement and retention efforts.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative partnerships with school districts, families, employers, hospital departments, Department of Rehabilitation Services, and other community agencies to recruit participants, develop internship opportunities, coordinate services, and create pathways to competitive integrated employment.
  • Assist with department events, programs, and conferences during the evening and/or weekend.
  • Other duties as assigned.
