About The Position

The Special Education Teacher in the 8:1:1 program provides highly specialized instruction to students with significant management needs who are eligible for the New York State Alternate Assessment (NYSAA). The teacher designs and delivers individualized, standards-based instruction aligned with the Unique Learning System (ULS) curriculum, focusing on functional academics, life skills, and post-secondary readiness.

Requirements

  • Valid New York State Certification in Special Education (Students with Disabilities)
  • Knowledge of NYSAA framework and alternate assessment
  • Knowledge of Unique Learning System (ULS) curriculum
  • Knowledge of behavior management strategies and data-driven instruction
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills

  • Experience working with students with significant disabilities preferred

Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver specially designed instruction (SDI) individualized to each student’s IEP goals and learning profile
  • Implement and adapt the Unique Learning System (ULS) curriculum to support diverse learning needs
  • Provide instruction in functional academics (literacy, numeracy, communication), daily living skills (hygiene, dressing, meal preparation, money management), social-emotional development (self-regulation, communication, conflict resolution), community awareness and safety, and vocational readiness skills
  • Create a structured, supportive, and inclusive classroom environment that addresses complex behavioral and management needs
  • Utilize positive behavior supports and interventions
  • Collaborate closely with paraprofessionals to ensure effective student support and supervision
  • Differentiate instruction to accommodate a wide range of abilities and communication needs
  • Develop and implement IEP goals and objectives aligned with NYSAA standards
  • Collect and analyze data to monitor student progress and adjust instruction accordingly
  • Prepare students for participation in the New York State Alternate Assessment (NYSAA)
  • Maintain accurate documentation and progress reports
  • Coordinate and supervise job site experiences to support vocational skill development
  • Integrate real-world learning opportunities and community-based instruction
  • Teach workplace readiness skills, including task completion, following directions, and appropriate behaviors
  • Work collaboratively with related service providers, support staff, and families
  • Participate in Committee on Special Education (CSE) meetings and program planning
  • Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress and needs
  • Partner with administration regarding placement and program implementation
  • Deliver individualized academic, behavioral, and life skills instruction
  • Facilitate structured, supervised work-based learning
