About The Position

KIPP Memphis Public Schools is seeking a Special Education Teacher for Functional Skills at the Middle School level. This role is responsible for delivering effective, high-quality, rigorous instruction to produce unmatched results and student understanding. The teacher will promote a college-preparatory culture to assist students on their journey to and through college. This position requires a commitment to working with educationally underserved students and contributing to the design and development of the school. The teacher will perform additional duties as necessary to ensure all KIPP students learn and contribute to the school's community, embodying a 'whatever it takes, no excuses' philosophy.

Requirements

  • Active Tennessee state licensure and certification - endorsement matching subject area & grade band.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of special education and specialty area.
  • Knowledge and skills in working with children with behavior and emotional disabilities.
  • Commitment to working with educationally underserved students.
  • Commitment to the design and development of the school.
  • Bachelor's degree.

Nice To Haves

  • At least two years of teaching experience.
  • Master's in Education / Teaching / Content area.
  • Experience/strength in content area/Highly Qualified status.
  • Experience teaching in an urban school and/or charter network.

Responsibilities

  • Provides research-based specialized instruction to address the instructional goals and objectives contained within each student’s Individualized Educational Program (IEP).
  • Assesses student progress and determines the need for additional reinforcement or adjustments to instructional techniques.
  • Employs various teaching techniques, methods and principles of learning to enable students to meet their IEP goals.
  • Develops and implements annual Individualized Educational Program (IEP) plans for students to include: present levels of educational performance, special education needs, instructional goals and objectives, and the special education and related services required to meet those goals.
  • Schedules team meetings and works cooperatively with child study team members and others in developing instructional goals and strategies.
  • Coordinates the delivery of special education services in each student's IEP.
  • Plans a program of study and unit/weekly/daily lessons that are aligned with the school’s curriculum and meet the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students.
  • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and is developmentally appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
  • Implements, by instruction and action, the region’s philosophy of education, the KIPP Memphis curriculum, and instructional goals and objectives.
  • Takes necessary and reasonable precautions to assure safety in the classroom and the school for all students.
  • Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations.
  • Assists the administrative team in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct.
  • Makes provisions for being available to the students and to the parents for education-related purposes outside of the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
  • Maintains professional relationships with colleagues.
  • Actively engages in all professional development opportunities.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
