The Special Education RISE Co-Teacher supports students with significant cognitive and/or pervasive developmental disabilities in K–12 classrooms using a functional curriculum focused on daily living and vocational skills that help prepare students for adult life in the community. Instruction includes practical academics, communication, community, domestic, leisure and recreation, and vocational skills. Classrooms emphasize communication, independence, skill generalization in natural settings, and participation in general education activities with typical peers. Co-Teachers support RISE classrooms in the Academy (K–5) or College Prep (6–12), working with students in lower student-teacher ratios, often 1:3, to support their academic needs. This role is suited to candidates seeking experience in special education teaching, including those with at least 48 college hours who want challenging work and opportunities to advance their education careers. The position works under the direction and guidance of facilitators and classroom teachers and may include supporting students with daily living activities, such as feeding, lifting, and toileting. At some campuses, accompanying students on school buses before or after school may be needed.
