IDEA Special Education RISE teachers support students with a wide range of learning, cognitive, emotional, and physical disabilities and hold them to high achievement expectations so they can reach their fullest potential. They teach subjects including Reading, Writing, Math, History, and Adaptive PE, and provide education, resources, training, and emotional support to students’ families to help them plan for their children’s long-term needs. The teacher adapts instruction to students’ needs, develops and implements Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), coordinates related services, assesses and tracks student progress, and communicates regularly with students and families. The role also includes facilitating Admission, Review and Dismissal meetings, implementing consistent behavior-management approaches, supporting transitions between grades and after graduation, and contributing to an inclusive, productive classroom and school culture. Teachers submit lesson plans two weeks in advance, update gradebooks weekly, hold tutoring sessions as needed, and participate in manager check-ins, meetings, school duties and functions, and professional learning. The role requires a minimum of 40+ hours at school per week. Additional duties may include after-school tutoring or Saturday school, based on student needs. The teacher oversees the daily work and responsibilities of a Special Education Co-Teacher (para-professional) in the RISE classroom.
