About The Position

The Special Education Paraprofessional will monitor students during arrival, lunch, recess, and dismissal. They will assist in classroom instruction under the direction of the general and special education teacher, implement Behavioral Intervention Plans (BIPs) as written in the IEP, and assist students in following the classroom schedule. The role also involves recording and summarizing data as directed by the special education teacher, maintaining daily communication with the special education teacher, and assisting in the modification/accommodation of classroom work according to individual student IEPs. The paraprofessional will provide appropriate individualized services to assist students in their inclusionary services and maintain confidentiality of student information, following all employee practices listed in the Paraprofessional Employees Agreement.

Requirements

  • Pass Para-Pro examination or have 60 hours of college credit.
  • High school diploma.
  • Previous experience with children or students with special needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with others and understand individual students’ needs.
  • Ability to accurately record and summarize data as directed by the special education teacher.
  • Willingness to participate in pre and ongoing training programs.
  • Understand the individual needs of students as described in their IEP.
  • Ability to lift student if necessary (all students over 40 pounds are a 2-person lift).

Responsibilities

  • Maintain confidentiality of student information.
  • Follow all employee practices listed in the Paraprofessional Employees Agreement.
  • Support the needs of special education students or other special education staff in the building as directed.
  • Assist substitute teachers and paraprofessionals in adapting to needs of students and daily schedule of activities.
  • Assist students as needed to achieve individual goals and objectives for their IEPs.
  • Implement behavior and support plans as described in the students’ IEPs.
  • Assist with toileting and/or diapering as needed.
  • Assist with feeding as needed.
