About The Position

This position is for a Special Education / CI Paraeducator at Port Huron High School. The role involves supporting students with mental impairments and assisting in their educational and personal development. The paraeducator will work closely with students, parents, and staff, and must be willing to provide assistance in various areas, including personal hygiene, health, and community living. The position requires flexibility, good judgment for student safety, and the ability to perform other related duties to ensure student success.

Requirements

High school graduate or equivalent (GED)
Associate’s Degree or 60 semester hours at an institution of higher education, or Meet a rigorous standard of quality and demonstrate, through passage of a formal state or local academic assessment approved by the State Board of Education: Michigan Test for Teacher Certification – Professional Readiness Exam (MTTC) or the original Basic Skills Test (MTTC)
A passing score of at least 480 on the evidence-based reading and writing section of the SAT and 530 on the mathematics section in lieu of the Basic Skills Test or Professional Readiness Exam
ETS Parapro Assessment – A passing score of 460 is required
Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (CPI) Trained or willing to be trained.
Must be able to bend, twist, stoop, squat and lift up to 50 pounds in assisting students, if needed.

Responsibilities

Demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental characteristic of learners with mental impairments.
Demonstrate the ability to communicate with the students, parents, and staff.
Provide assistance and instruction in the area of personal hygiene, toileting, health and fitness, and community living.
Participate in field trips and home visits when necessary.
Attend summer or after school in-services which pertain to meeting the needs of mentally impaired learners.
Understand and respect the students’ privacy rights as provided by FERPA.
Promote positive self-esteem and encourage academic growth.
Provide for the safety of all students and staff.
Respond to changes in assignment in emergency situations as determined by the building principal.
Perform other related duties or tasks necessary to insure the success of students and the program.
Provide physical strength and stamina for no-violent intervention when necessary.
Conducts him/herself in a professional manner commensurate with his/her position and project a good public image of the School District in dealing with the community and employee groups.
