About The Position

Assist a special education teacher in meeting the physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities in a special education setting. The Structured Learning Class (SLC) serves children with autism and/or other communication disorders who need support developing functional language and communication and functional behavior skills. Instruction emphasizes language, communication, and behavior beginning at the preschool level, with increasing emphasis on academic support and functional routines at the elementary and middle school levels. SLC classrooms use highly structured environments, positive behavior supports, and instructional strategies aligned with Applied Behavior Analysis. Students participate in activities with non-disabled peers, with support as appropriate, to generalize skills learned in the SLC classroom. Classrooms are arranged to support intensive specialized instruction at students’ prerequisite levels of the academic Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). The aide supports students’ instructional, physical, and personal-care needs; helps manage behavior; supervises students; and assists the teacher with classroom materials, records, and reports.
