About The Position

The Steward/Chef/Waiter will assist the department in meeting its operational and customer service expectations. The incumbent will be responsible for fulfilling vacancies in the department including station commissary, on-board crewing assignments such as chef, steward or waiter. The successful candidate is required to have the ability to work long hours and manage changing work assignments with little notice. This role functions on a flexible, as-needed basis, covering scheduled shifts during vacations, sick leave, and peak periods. Hours are variable and not guaranteed, requiring adaptability and readiness to support operational needs.

Requirements

  • Secondary School diploma or possess a General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
  • Proven ability to handle cash
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to perform different functions simultaneously
  • Strong teamwork skills
  • Committed to Company Health and Safety
  • Requires frequent travel on board the train
  • Flexibility to work weekends and statutory holidays
  • Valid G driver’s license

Nice To Haves

  • Three years’ cooking experience or two years of experience plus a culinary certificate
  • Smart serve certificate
  • Certificate in First Aid
  • Safe food handing certificate
  • Fluent in English, French and Cree

Responsibilities

  • Supporting staffing requirements of the On-Board Services Department at Ontario Northland
  • Support department through commissary, assist with loading supplies onto the train
  • Plan and direct food preparation, cooking and serving activities on the Polar Bear Express train service between Cochrane and Moosonee
  • Ensure food meets quality standards
  • Estimate food requirements
  • Prepare and cook food on a regular basis
  • Clean and sanitize kitchen areas and dishes
  • Providing quality customer service including implementation of outlined procedures in the event of train delays and/or services disruption
  • As a spare board employee, must have the flexibility to be available 2 hours prior to train scheduled departure times
