About The Position

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Brigham Young University announces a search for a candidate to fill a CFS-track (analogous to tenure-track) faculty position. We are particularly interested in candidates whose teaching and research complement the current profile of literature and culture faculty within the department. Initial rank will be consistent with qualifications and experience.

Requirements

  • PhD in Hispanic/Spanish literature, cultural studies, or equivalent. Foreign degrees acceptable. PhD in Portuguese, Comparative Literature, or a related field will be considered if the candidate can fulfill the duties/expectations of the position.
  • Required degree must be completed by the start date.
  • Experience teaching Spanish courses at the university level.
  • Experience performing scholarly research.
  • Fluency in written and spoken Spanish and English.
  • Successful candidate must relocate and/or reside in Utah for the duration of their employment.
  • All new employees who are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will be required to hold and be worthy to hold a current temple recommend.
  • All faculty are required to abide by the university’s Honor Code and Dress & Grooming Standards.
  • Successful candidates are expected to support and contribute to the academic and religious missions of the university within the context of the principles and doctrine of the affiliated church.

  • The ability to teach Portuguese literature/culture classes is highly valued.

Responsibilities

  • Teach six courses per year, including a variety of courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, such as Introduction to Hispanic Literature, Cultures of Spain and Spanish America, and/or other courses, depending on expertise.
  • Advise undergraduate and graduate students, including them in mentored research initiatives.
  • Maintain a robust research agenda, publishing regularly in respected venues.
  • Lend service to the college, university, and profession at large, as well as contribute actively to the life of the department.
  • Work in a respectful and collegial manner with all colleagues, including department faculty and staff, adjunct faculty, and student instructors.
