The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Brigham Young University is seeking up to two Professorial faculty candidates who will challenge our talented student body and contribute to our teaching and research initiatives. Professorial candidates in all areas of expertise will be considered. Successful candidates will be expected to develop an outstanding and impactful research program and to embrace the department’s focus on excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching and mentoring. Professorial candidates will be hired at the assistant professor, associate professor, or professor level depending on experience. Current department educational initiatives include a focus on technical excellence, innovation, leadership, and global engineering that prepare graduating students to become influential engineers in their chosen areas of expertise. The National Survey of Student Engagement placed BYU in the 93rd percentile for level of academic challenge and in the 91st percentile in fostering active and collaborative learning. The ACT score for the average freshman is at the 91st percentile nationally. Over 75 percent of our BS graduates attend graduate school, and BYU Mechanical Engineering is the third most common U.S. baccalaureate institution of those that go on to obtain doctoral degrees in Mechanical Engineering. Student teams from BYU consistently place in the top ten in national and international design competitions. Our students have exceptional experience in leadership and global settings (over 80 percent of graduating seniors speak a second language and/or have lived in a foreign country for over a year), helping them function effectively in diverse environments and making them well poised to become global leaders. We expect our faculty to challenge these outstanding students to reach their potential. The department has a strong research program with state-of-the-art facilities in supercomputing, electron optics, acoustics, microelectronic fabrication, and manufacturing processes. A new 200,000 square foot engineering building opened in September 2018 with offices, teaching and project labs, and classrooms. We have excellent research programs in compliant mechanisms, MEMS, autonomous vehicle control, multidisciplinary and parametric design, global product development, acoustics, structural dynamics, additive manufacturing, combustion, microfluidics, biomechanics, microstructure design, and experimental and computational fluid flow physics. BYU is committed to hiring faculty members who enthusiastically embrace and energetically advance its unique mission. To this end, please include a one-page mission alignment statement as part of your application that addresses how you might, as a BYU faculty member: (1) live a life of loyalty to Jesus Christ and His restored Church and align yourself with doctrines and teachings declared by living prophets, seers, and revelators; (2) demonstrate intentionality in building faith in Jesus Christ and testimony of His restored gospel among students and others in the BYU community; and (3) teach your subject matter with the Spirit of God and strive to keep it “bathed in the light and color of the restored gospel” (Spencer W. Kimball).
