About The Position

To plan and provide effective academic instruction and support for at-promise youth at various academic levels and abilities who are detained or incarcerated in a secure setting. Works with at-risk students at various academic/achievement levels to provide educational services which are comparable to those in public school. Prepares for classes assigned and shows written evidence of preparation in accordance with local, state and federal guidelines. Establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects with the ability to communicate these objectives effectively to students, staff, and parents. Maintains a classroom environment conducive to effective learning in a secure, restrictive setting. Evaluates student performance on a regular basis to assist them in setting and maintaining goals. Develops and maintains standards of classroom behavior. Establishes high expectations for students by employing a variety of instructional strategies and media. Performs duties as a team member on an interdisciplinary team in a professional and ethical manner. Maintains a positive school climate by cooperating with other staff in planning the instructional program, goals and objectives. Utilizes the team approach by working closely with the other teachers, detention home staff and administration. Maintains accurate and complete records as required by law, division policy and regulations. Complies with and enforces school rules, state and federal guidelines. Attends and participates in faculty meetings and other professional meetings. Strives to maintain and improve professional competence. Performs other school duties and assignments as appointed.

Requirements

  • Must hold valid collegiate or postgraduate professional license or be eligible for a provisional license with the appropriate endorsement.
  • Specific content area knowledge and expertise of subject matter.
  • Strong teaching, interpersonal, organizational and administrative skills.
  • Ability to take responsibility and be independent in accomplishing all instructional and administrative objectives.
  • Ability to work in a flexible school environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with at-promise youth (ages 11-18) or an alternative educational setting preferred but not required.
