The Sonographer uses diagnostic medical equipment to help diagnose medical conditions through sonography, or ultrasonography, which uses sound waves to create images for assessment and diagnosis. The role may involve specialization in obstetric/gynecologic, abdominal, neurosonography, or breast sonography. The Sonographer reviews patient histories and physician instructions, prepares and operates equipment, explains procedures, positions patients, and applies gel to facilitate sound-wave transmission. During scans, the Sonographer evaluates images, selects images for physician review, takes measurements, calculates values, and prepares preliminary results for physicians. The role also includes maintaining patient records and equipment, protecting confidential information, and complying with safety, infection-control, and quality-improvement procedures. The position requires relevant work experience, a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer certification, and graduation from an approved discipline-specific program.
