About The Position

The Sonographer uses diagnostic medical equipment and ultrasound technology to help diagnose medical conditions. The role may specialize in obstetric/gynecologic, abdominal, neurosonography, or breast sonography. The Sonographer reviews patient histories and physician instructions, prepares and operates equipment, explains procedures, positions patients, and captures images for physician interpretation. The role also records relevant information, takes measurements, prepares preliminary reports, maintains patient records and equipment, protects confidential information, and follows safety, infection control, and quality improvement policies. The position is with Vanderbilt Imaging Services in the VIS Bellevue Techs organization.

Requirements

Certification as a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer.
Graduate of an approved discipline-specific program.
One year of relevant work experience.

Responsibilities

Review patients’ medical histories and physicians’ instructions.
Prepare equipment for procedures and select appropriate equipment settings.
Explain procedures to patients and record relevant medical history.
Direct patients into positions that provide the best view.
Apply gel to the skin to aid sound-wave transmission.
Operate ultrasound equipment to direct high-frequency, nonionizing sound waves into areas of the body and produce images.
Review scan images for visual distinctions between healthy and unhealthy areas.
Select images for physician diagnostic review.
Take measurements, calculate values, and analyze results in preliminary reports for physicians.
Maintain patient records and adjust or maintain equipment.
Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
Comply with safety, infection control, and quality improvement policies and procedures.
Perform other duties as assigned.
