Requirements

  • American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) registered or board eligible required.
  • Graduation from an accredited Ultrasound Technology program required.
  • Participation in mandatory inservices and continuing education as mandated by policies & procedures, and as directed by supervisors.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and interact with patients and family members as well as hospital personnel and coworkers required.
  • Ability to effectively organize work in order to perform several tasks at once required.
  • Must be able to follow established Universal Standard and Radiation Safety precautions.
  • Position requires flexibility to accommodate fluctuation in daily schedule, including but not limited to overtime, irregular hours or on-call responsibilities.
  • Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) strongly preferred at time of hire, required within 3 months of hire.
  • Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography registered or board eligible required.
  • Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) credential is required within one year of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • One year general and vascular Sonography preferred.
  • Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) credential of the Abdomen (AB) and Obstetrics & Gynecology (OB/GYN) are preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Exam performance/quality: Identifies each patient by ID band verification and birth date. Ensures patient understanding of pending procedure. Covers appropriate body parts and positions patient correctly. Follows appropriate guidelines and departmental protocols. Performs exams as priority dictates and as directed. Critiques each exam for technical and positional accuracy and makes appropriate corrections if necessary. Follows American College of Radiology (ACR) guidelines. Checks all films with Radiologist and discusses end results.
  • Workflow management: Reviews orders for clinical and demographic consistency and verifies accuracy prior to exam. Willingly assists physicians, patients, and coworkers as needed and seeks opportunities to provide patient care. Understands and supports the direction and workflow of the department. Maintains awareness of ongoing exams and assists coworkers as needed. Provides exam information and status updates to pertinent staff members. Relieves coworkers from procedures/exams as necessary. Is in the department and ready to work at the start of scheduled shift. Has processes set in place to allow for leaving at the end of scheduled shift. Obtains and consolidates all images, reports and history with completed exam information for review. Takes call. Coordinates inpatient procedure flow. Provides management of ultrasound department workflow and patient exam flow. Is willing and able to fill in shifts or trade days when needed at anytime. Heightened focus on efficiency.
  • Systems/Cerner: Maintains a working knowledge of Cerner. Starts and completes own exams correctly and in a timely manner. Consistently uses the Online Worklist to monitor orders and order status. Verifies correct images matched with order. Demonstrates knowledge of RIS/PACS/Navicare/Outlook/Angel/mhsintranet/Nighthawk. Consistently uses Exam Management for order modification, to document comments and film usage/repeats. Shows a working knowledge of Folder Media and Order View/Entry capabilities. Consistently uses Film Tracking to document the movement of the films throughout their usage. Shows a working knowledge of Order View/Entry capabilities. Maintains working knowledge of Outlook and mhsintranet. Able to perform clean up functions on PACS workstation. Maintains working knowledge of Navicare. Maintains working knowledge of Nighthawk.
  • Department Policy/Procedures: Ensures proper patient identification on all images to comply with department policies and procedures. Willingly seeks opportunity to provide patient care, or assist others as needed. Demonstrates knowledge of department guidelines through responsible behavior/actions. Maintains updated ARDMS license. Ensures that call reports and/or other specifications are followed through. Reports issues/concerns as soon as possible and provides assistance with resolution/follow-up.
  • Clinical Enrichment: Provides and monitors “on the job training” per Methodist College standards. Maintains professional and courteous relationship with students and instructors. Provides leadership and guidance for students' education clinical experience.
  • Confidentiality: Maintains patient confidentiality coinciding with HIPAA. Maintains student/co-worker confidentiality coinciding with FERPA.
  • Provides appropriate care specific to the age of the patient to ensure understanding and comfort level of treatment as outlined in the “Age Specific Criteria”. Provides appropriate patient care. Shows confidence and competency in all age specific categories. Ensures patient comfort and understanding of ordered exam. Completed age specific evaluation. Provides care for the optimal patient experience. Actively participates to perfect customer service and communication by building a great team system. Talking to others to convey information effectively with respect, empathy, and compassion. Gives full attention to what other people are saying, asking questions as appropriate to better understand what is happening.
