About The Position

Next Gen Software Solutions is seeking a Solution Architect with deep experience in IBM mainframe environments and modern AWS, Java, and Spring Boot architecture. The role supports modernization and integration efforts within the Social Security Administration's technology ecosystem. It is based onsite in Woodlawn, Maryland, five days per week, and is a W-2 contract position lasting 12+ months. Public Trust eligibility is required.

The architect will design hybrid mainframe and cloud solutions, modernization pathways for legacy workloads, and integration patterns between mainframe systems and cloud-native applications. The role also involves leading solution design sessions, translating legacy business logic into secure and scalable cloud-ready architectures, ensuring compliance with client security, audit, and federal IT standards, and supporting Agile delivery across multi-year modernization initiatives.

Requirements

• 10+ years working with IBM mainframe technologies, including COBOL, PL/I, JCL, CICS, and DB2.
• 5+ years architecting AWS solutions, including Lambda, S3, EC2, RDS PostgreSQL, IAM, and KMS.
• Strong background in Java, Spring, Spring Boot, and enterprise integration.
• Experience with AWS Mainframe Modernization or equivalent migration frameworks.
• Ability to design strangler fig migration patterns and coexistence architectures.
• Strong communication skills and ability to work directly with federal stakeholders.
• Must be able to work onsite in Woodlawn, Maryland, Monday through Friday.
• Public Trust eligibility required.

Nice To Haves

• Experience with mainframe-to-cloud data migration, including VSAM and DB2 to AWS RDS or S3.
• Experience with enterprise print systems (EPA) modernization.
• Background in Agile delivery within federal environments.

Responsibilities

• Architect hybrid mainframe and cloud solutions using IBM z/OS, COBOL, PL/I, JCL, CICS, DB2, and AWS services.
• Design modernization pathways for legacy workloads using Java, Spring Boot, microservices, and AWS Mainframe Modernization.
• Develop integration patterns between mainframe systems and cloud-native applications, including REST APIs and event-driven services.
• Lead solution design sessions with client stakeholders, engineering teams, and modernization partners.
• Translate legacy business logic into scalable, secure, cloud-ready architectures.
• Ensure compliance with client security, audit, and federal IT standards.
• Support Agile delivery across multi-year modernization initiatives.
