About The Position

To provide reliable, efficient, and cost-effective labor functions for the collection of solid waste, recyclables, yard waste, and bulk waste, including their disposal, and to aid in the health, safety, and welfare of the citizenry. This role involves assisting the driver of a refuse collection vehicle, performing manual collection of various waste types, and ensuring proper refuse collection along assigned routes. The position requires adherence to safety regulations, maintaining vehicle equipment, and presenting a positive public image.

Requirements

  • One (1) year experience in labor activities including labor and trade type employment, truck driver (non-CDL equipment) or equipment operator.
  • Possession of and ability to maintain a valid State of Florida Driver's License.
  • Ability to receive and understand oral and written orders and execute those orders effectively.
  • Knowledge of traffic and highway safety rules and regulations and precautions to be taken to avoid accidents.
  • Ability to work overtime and/or be on call.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
  • Exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally and up to fifty (50) pounds of force frequently.
  • Considerable physical activity including walking, lifting, reaching, stooping, pulling, grasping, balancing, climbing, kneeling, standing, and crouching.
  • Subject to inside and outside activities with a variety of weather changes or atmospheric conditions.
  • May be exposed to noise and jobs with potential hazards that may require special protection and/or special safety precautions.
  • Visual acuity is required to inspect work completed by crews for accuracy and quality.
  • Required to hear sufficiently to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
  • Manual dexterity is required to operate equipment in performance of duties.
  • Considerable public contact.
  • Must present favorable appearance.
  • Must be able to maintain self-control, both physically and orally, at all times.

Responsibilities

  • Assists the driver of a side or rear loading refuse collection vehicle equipped with hydraulic cart dumpers.
  • Performs manual collection of yard waste, bulk waste, recyclables, or solid waste in tandem with a partner on a route.
  • Operates a pick-up truck or other non-CDL required equipment.
  • Collects all authorized refuse properly placed at authorized stops along the assigned route.
  • Collects refuse that does not exceed 50 pounds in weight.
  • Prevents littering due to spillage or scattering of refuse and retrieves all litter caused as a result.
  • Completes the collection of assigned route before the shift is completed or may be required to return on the off day to complete collections.
  • Prohibited from engaging in any scavenging activities.
  • Inventories and maintains all special equipment (fire extinguishers, etc.) placed on vehicles.
  • Executes the proper use and operation of the land mobile communications system.
  • Performs strenuous work in a variety of weather conditions, including high heat.
  • Responsible at all times for the public impression created by his/her appearance and performance, and that of the vehicle.
