About The Position

The City of Wilmington is seeking a dependable, safety-focused individual to join their Solid Waste team as a Solid Waste Technician. This role is crucial for keeping operations running smoothly in a crew-oriented environment that values communication, accountability, and shared success. The position ensures routes are completed efficiently and safely each day, offering a stable 4-day workweek (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday) starting at 5:30 AM, which promotes work-life balance. The job involves working on collection routes, handling various types of waste, and performing essential maintenance tasks. The City provides excellent training opportunities, including assistance for obtaining a Commercial Driver's License (CDL), with potential for advancement to Operator/Driver. This is an essential position that may require work during holidays, City-sponsored events, and inclement weather.

Requirements

  • Ability to read and write at a minimum of the 8th grade level.
  • Experience and ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to obtain FEMA independent study course certificate within 60 days of hire.
  • Ability to comply with written and oral instructions.
  • Computer skills necessary for training and record keeping.
  • Must be able to push and pull over 100 lbs. occasionally (sled weighing 90 pounds).
  • Must be able to lift and carry 50-100 lbs. frequently (climbing, lifting, and walking carrying 80 pounds, 5 times).
  • Must be able to lift or carry 20-50 lbs. constantly (climbing, lifting, and walking carrying 50 pounds, 5 times).

Responsibilities

  • Ride on the back of collection trucks to complete daily trash and recycling routes, including pulling carts, dumping them, activating the packing system, and returning carts to the curb.
  • Collect trash, recycling, and vegetative debris by emptying carts, bags, and cans, and performing manual lifting.
  • Load and dispose of bulky items such as furniture, metal, and electronics.
  • Deliver, repair, and replace trash and recycling carts for residents and businesses.
  • Assist with debris disposal using the truck’s automated ejection system at designated sites.
  • Support Solid Waste Operators and fellow crew members.
  • Assist the driver with cleaning of the truck, including the cab and using a pressure washer and brush.
  • Abide by all safety standards and protocols.
