Solid Waste Environmental Laborer (Winter)

About The Position

This position assists with manual tasks related to the handling of solid waste and litter control. Work is performed in accordance with established policies and procedures and Borough core values: Accountability, Customer Focus, Dedication, Integrity, Responsiveness, and Teamwork. This is a six-month temporary winter assignment expected to work 40 hours per week. The anticipated schedule varies based on division needs. The position is Pay Grade D1, DOE.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
Less than one year of experience; relevant experience should include equipment operation, hand and power tool usage, processing technician work, plumbing installation and repair, and pipework.
Comfort working in tight spaces.
Possession of, or ability to readily obtain, a valid Alaska driver's license for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
At least 19 years of age and one year of driving experience.
Successfully pass a pre-employment background check, drug screen, and physical.
Complete the Hepatitis B vaccination series and maintain a current Tetanus (Td or Tdap) vaccination, or provide signed declinations, in accordance with applicable health and safety guidelines.
Laborers in the hazardous waste division must complete a pre-employment and annual HAZWOPER physical exam.

Responsibilities

Assist in maintaining the central landfill.
Process latex paints and other universal wastes according to division policies and procedures.
Pack refrigerants into containers.
Transport universal waste from transfer sites.
Load abandoned waste into a vehicle for transport to the landfill.
Assist with tagging vehicles for impound; take photographs and collect data.
Cut weeds and brush.
Assist with snow removal operations.
Answer customer questions and direct the public to waste disposal areas.
Perform related duties.
