About The Position

This is a high-level attorney in the Office of the City Solicitor. The senior attorney in this classification provides leadership in case management for trials, projects, and supervises a team of attorneys. This classification of attorney has lead responsibilities on all matters that proceed to trial. While they may delegate trial preparation and trial appearances to a lesser grade attorney, they are a courtroom prosecutor and will also litigate matters on behalf of the City of Atlanta. In addition, they provide and assume leadership to subordinate attorneys and staff.

Requirements

  • Has the desire, skills and abilities to lead, inspire, manage and supervise a team of junior and experienced attorneys
  • Has thorough knowledge of office policies, procedures, and activities as they pertain to the performance of duties relating to the position of Solicitor Senior Assistant II.
  • Has the ability to compile, organize, prepare and maintain an assortment of records, reports and information in an effective manner and according to departmental and/or governmental regulations.
  • Has comprehensive knowledge of the terminology used by a prosecutor’s office.
  • Has comprehensive knowledge of city ordinance violations, misdemeanor violations, and felony offenses and an understanding of cross-charging.
  • Has the ability to utilize independent judgment in routine and unpredictable situations.
  • Has the ability to plan, organize and prioritize daily assignments and work activities.
  • Has an excellent working knowledge of criminal law and procedure, as well as court room procedure and methods, as required in the performance of duties.
  • Ability to use a variety of computer tools and specialized data systems.
  • Required to respond to inquiries or complaints from the general public, other governmental agencies, law enforcement, and other attorneys.
  • Law degree required
  • Five (5) years of experience in traffic and criminal law.
  • Valid State Bar License of Georgia.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as a senior member of the legal staff and is prosecuting all cases on behalf of the city that are tried in the Municipal Court of Atlanta
  • Supervises a team of attorneys that have responsibility for trying/resolving cases in the Municipal Court of Atlanta.
  • Lead and supervise the scheduling, planning, and organizing of the work for a team which may consist of Solicitor Assistant Attorneys and Senior Solicitor Assistant Attorneys
  • Performs probable cause, trial appellate and post adjudicatory functions related to cases assigned.
  • Collaborates with police zones and other city departments and actively participates in Neighborhood Planning Unit meetings (NPUs), neighborhood association meetings, community cleanups, police and city department details, and special neighborhood events.
  • Participates in the development preparation and presentation of research projects, investigations, or other legal proceedings as assigned and directed by the Solicitor or his designee.
  • Has lead responsibility on matters that proceed to trial and may delegate trial preparation and trial appearances to a lesser grade attorney.
  • Responsible for the timely processing of all matters assigned and as directed by the Solicitor or his designee.
  • The Solicitor Senior Assistant II provides substantive and procedural advice within the assigned area and responds to requests for information from constituencies.
  • Independently research, interprets, and applies legal principles of a difficult nature within the assigned discipline.
  • May assist in the training and direction of junior staff.
  • Stays abreast, informs, and keeps persons within his/her areas of responsibility informed of applicable laws, rules, procedures, policies, and practices related.
  • Responsible for coordinating activities and resolving issues as appropriate and as directed by the Solicitor or his designee.
  • Advises police officers on individual cases, general procedure and legal developments relating to case preparation.
  • Performs those duties that are required by law or ordinance.
  • Directs legal support and investigation as related to assigned cases
  • Reviews police reports and determines criminal charges daily, secures additional information from the appropriate law enforcement officers.
  • Formulates strategy, researches applicable law and investigates data to determine sentencing recommendations and to conduct plea negotiations.
  • Delegates work assignments to attorneys and the legal support teams.
  • Prepares and responds to pre and post and trial motions.
  • Provides quality customer service to management, coworkers, other city departments, court staff, and the general public through excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Operates computers and works with databases, spreadsheets, presentations, and virtual communication mechanisms.
  • May perform other similar or related duties which may not be specifically included within this position description, but which are consistent within the general level of the job and the responsibilities described.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.
