Software Systems Engineer

Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory•Laurel, MD

About The Position

The Software Systems Engineer will help build software systems that address complex Navy problems, including sensor integration, data fusion, distributed communications, and decentralized processing. The role works with multidisciplinary engineering teams to rapidly develop and deploy prototype solutions, contributing across the product life cycle from concept development and algorithm design through implementation and testing. Engineers use a balance of emerging and proven technologies, learn and apply different languages and frameworks as tasks require, and employ systems engineering and system design principles. The work may include real-time tactical systems, prototype development, and improvements to existing systems through refactoring and new capabilities. The team encourages continuous learning, experimentation, and modern development practices while maintaining scalable, extensible, dependable designs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 3 years of experience in real-time software design and development.
  • Exposure to at least one object-oriented programming language; C++ is preferred.
  • Familiarity with common DevOps toolchains, such as GitLab.
  • Experience with one or more scripting languages, such as Python or Perl.
  • Strong interest in designing and evaluating software architecture.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and deliver timely results.
  • Willingness to occasionally travel to sponsor sites for test events and data collection.
  • Willingness and ability to continually learn new programming languages, software frameworks, and practices.
  • Ability to obtain Interim Secret clearance by the start date and ultimately obtain Secret-level clearance; eligibility for classified access requires U.S. citizenship.

Nice To Haves
