About The Position

The Software Engineering Intern will contribute to AI/ML diagnostics and calibration work within KLA’s Semiconductor Products and Customers business unit, specifically the RAPID division, which develops reticle inspection solutions. The role involves building Python-based software and AI/ML prototypes that combine analytical models with image-based diagnostics, and evaluating their performance against analytical baselines and expert assessments. The intern will prepare representative image and signal datasets; assess metrics such as resolution, noise, spectral content, sampling and aliasing, uniformity and contrast, and optical or system aberrations; and document accuracy, uncertainty, and failure cases. The role also includes identifying performance-limiting parameters and potential contributors to degradation, recommending calibration actions for human review, and producing reproducible code, tests, and technical documentation. With a mentor, the intern may also explore AI-assisted troubleshooting, engineering analysis, or workflow automation.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a BS, MS, or PhD program in computer science, electrical engineering, applied mathematics, physics, or a related discipline.
  • Proficiency in Python and scientific computing, with foundational knowledge of machine learning.
  • Experience analyzing data through coursework, research, or projects.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and clear written and verbal communication.

Nice To Haves

  • Exposure to image or signal processing, optics, imaging systems, or calibration methods.
  • Experience with PyTorch, TensorFlow, or scikit-learn.
  • Familiarity with software testing, version control, or reproducible experimentation.
  • Familiarity with LLMs, retrieval-augmented generation, AI coding assistants, or workflow automation.

Responsibilities

  • Develop Python-based software and AI/ML prototypes combining analytical models with image-based diagnostics.
  • Prepare representative image and signal datasets and assess resolution, noise, spectral content, sampling and aliasing, uniformity and contrast, and optical or system aberrations.
  • Evaluate prototypes quantitatively against analytical baselines and expert assessments, documenting accuracy, uncertainty, and failure cases.
  • Identify performance-limiting parameters and likely contributors to degradation, and recommend calibration actions for human review.
  • Build reproducible code, tests, and technical documentation.
  • Collaborate with engineers using approved data and AI tools while protecting proprietary information.
  • Explore AI-assisted troubleshooting, engineering analysis, or workflow automation with a mentor to support the core diagnostics work.

  • Medical, dental, vision, life, and other voluntary benefits (interns are eligible for some listed benefits).
  • 401(K) with company matching (intern eligibility may vary).
  • Employee stock purchase program (ESPP) (intern eligibility may vary).
  • Student debt assistance (intern eligibility may vary).
  • Tuition reimbursement program (intern eligibility may vary).
  • Development and career growth opportunities and programs.
  • Financial planning benefits.
  • Wellness benefits, including an employee assistance program (EAP).
  • Paid time off and paid company holidays.
  • Family care and bonding leave.
  • Potential participation in performance incentive programs.
