Software Engineering Co-op (Summer/Fall 2027)

About The Position

This is a full-time, Monday-Friday co-op session that will run from May/June to December, including the 2027 Fall semester. Students are expected to take a semester off from coursework to fully engage in this working mentorship opportunity. As a Software Engineering Intern within Tactical Communications, you will contribute directly to the future of our software-defined tactical radio platforms, advanced networking solutions, and state-of-the-art cryptographic systems. You will collaborate with experienced engineers across multiple disciplines, gaining hands-on experience with modern development tools, embedded systems, and innovative approaches to trusted communications. Your work will help ensure our products meet real operational needs by optimizing performance, enhancing robustness, or exploring new design concepts. This role is ideal for individuals excited by complex technical challenges, curious about how trusted systems are engineered, and eager to learn from experts shaping the future of the connected battlespace.

Requirements

  • Must be pursuing Bachelor’s or Advanced degree in Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science and actively enrolled through the completion of the internship/co-op session
  • Must have a minimum of 60 hours of credit by the start of the internship / co-op session
  • Experience may be obtained through on-the-job experience, research, coursework, or projects
  • U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Active U.S. Department of Defense Clearance or the ability to obtain one
  • Some experience with C/C++, Rust, or Python programming languages
  • Some experience with Git or other version control systems
  • Familiarity with embedded software development
  • Familiarity with Linux development environments
  • Prior RTX internship, co-op, or work experience.

Responsibilities

  • Engage as part of a team developing embedded software, networking and communication products using C/C++, Python, and Rust
  • Support project success by collaborating with others across the full software development lifecycle (requirements, design, implementation, test development, and verification)
  • Participate in new software initiatives and work as part of a collaborative team: supporting each other and helping to make decisions that impact the overall cost, schedule, and technical performance of your team
