About The Position

Bowery is hiring a Software Engineer for its AI-first engineering team to help rethink the appraisal process using AI. This is a senior engineering role focused on building production software, not simply writing prompts. The engineer will make product decisions, own systems end to end, and maintain high engineering standards while using AI coding tools to increase their effectiveness.

Bowery is a post-Series B, profitable company with product-market fit and a small engineering team. The role offers the opportunity to build on the company’s proprietary appraisal-writing platform, high-quality data, and established customer base, while directly helping transform appraisal workflows. The position reports to the Head of Technology.

The engineering team works remote-first, prioritizes asynchronous communication, and makes space for focused work. The role also involves close collaboration with in-house appraisers and Operations teams; many of those users work from Bowery’s Cooper Square office three days per week.

Requirements

• At least 4 years of experience building and shipping production software.
• Strong fundamentals in system design, data modeling, APIs, and testing.
• Fluency in TypeScript and Node.js.
• Regular use of AI coding agents such as Claude Code, Codex, or similar, with sound judgment about their use and quality.
• Experience building with LLMs, including prompt design, RAG, structured outputs, and evaluations.
• Comfort making and defending product decisions, working through ambiguity, and owning work end to end.
• Ability to review AI-generated code critically and take responsibility for code merged.
• Care for clean interfaces, tests, and maintainable systems.

Nice To Haves

• Experience at an early-stage or fast-moving company.

• Experience with AWS, GitHub Actions, Terraform, and Docker.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and ship end-to-end features across the appraisal platform and AI-powered workflows, including data extraction, analysis, and narrative generation.
• Work directly with appraisers and Operations to understand problems, determine what to build, and make product decisions.
• Use AI coding tools such as Claude Code, Codex, or similar tools regularly, and help shape effective team practices for using them responsibly.
• Build LLM-backed features with evaluation, testing, and monitoring to measure quality.
• Own AWS infrastructure and deployments, including CI/CD with GitHub Actions, infrastructure as code with Terraform, and containerized services with Docker.
• Maintain high standards for system design, code review, testing, and observability.
