Everlaw•Oakland, CA
•$150,000 - $190,000•Hybrid

About The Position

The Software Engineer, Platform will build, modernize, and operate platform-wide logging, metrics, and alerting infrastructure that provides engineers with real-time visibility into production behavior. The role spans the telemetry stack, including core Java and Python libraries, ingestion pipelines, dashboards, and alerting, with a focus on helping engineering teams detect, diagnose, and resolve issues while maintaining high availability and strict FedRAMP compliance. The position is based in Everlaw’s Oakland, California office on a hybrid schedule: in the office Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with the option to work from home Tuesday and Friday. It is a full-time, exempt role and participates in on-call rotations. The Observability team builds and evolves infrastructure, observability, automation, and delivery systems for Everlaw’s engineering organization. Its work improves cloud architecture, development workflows, and platform reliability, helping engineers ship confidently while keeping the platform resilient, efficient, and secure.

Requirements

  • At least 2 years of professional software engineering experience building, testing, and operating production systems in a cloud environment; AWS is preferred.
  • Proficiency in a programming language such as Java, Go, or Python, and comfort learning new tools quickly.
  • Hands-on experience with observability tools for logging, metrics, or alerting, such as Datadog, Grafana, Prometheus, InfluxDB, Splunk, or PagerDuty.
  • Experience with infrastructure as code and container technologies, such as Terraform, Docker, Ansible, or Helm.
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly and navigate ambiguity by breaking large projects into clear milestones.
  • Authorization to work in the United States; Everlaw is not sponsoring U.S. employment visas for this role.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with OpenTelemetry or distributed tracing systems.
  • Experience building or operating telemetry pipelines and log routing at scale.
  • Experience operating distributed systems or working in regulated environments such as FedRAMP, HIPAA, or SOC 2.
  • Experience reducing alert fatigue and refining incident management practices.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain logging, metrics, and alerting infrastructure across commercial and federal environments using tools such as Datadog, Grafana, Prometheus, and PagerDuty.
  • Write reusable Java and Python libraries and integrations that help engineers emit structured logs, metrics, and traces from their services.
  • Develop and manage infrastructure as code with Terraform so dashboards, alert rules, and telemetry pipelines are versioned, reviewable, and reproducible.
  • Improve observability architecture by designing scalable telemetry solutions and incorporating emerging AI tools as the company grows.
  • Improve alert quality and incident response by tuning noisy alerts, creating actionable runbooks, and helping engineers identify useful signals during live incidents.
  • Document observability systems and support regulatory and compliance efforts, including alignment with FedRAMP and data-handling requirements.
  • Participate in on-call rotations, respond to production issues, and drive post-incident improvements to prevent recurrence.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Flexible Spending Accounts for health and dependent care expenses.
