Software Engineer

Alteryx•Irvine, CA

About The Position

Alteryx is looking for a Software Engineer to join our cloud platform engineering team, with a focus on orchestration, job execution, workflow runtime services, and shared control-plane/data-plane capabilities. In this role, you will help design, build, operate, and evolve backend services that coordinate how work moves through Alteryx Cloud. You will work on platform capabilities related to orchestration, job execution, workflow runtime services, and reliable service-to-service coordination. The role is backend-heavy and involves building APIs, services, workers, libraries, and runtime infrastructure. You will work with modern cloud-native systems and technologies such as TypeScript/Node.js, relational databases, messaging or queueing systems, event-driven architecture, containers, Kubernetes, and observability tooling. This is a hands-on engineering role for someone who writes modular, readable, and performant code, understands trade-offs in time, complexity, and maintainability, and leverages AI to improve productivity. You should be comfortable learning existing systems, designing small features, writing clear tests, and debugging behavior across services with guidance from experienced engineers. You will partner with platform, product, security, quality, and application teams to make orchestration and job execution capabilities reliable, understandable, and secure.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of hands-on experience building and maintaining production software, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience building backend services, APIs, or background workers and writing modular, readable, and performant code independently, preferably using TypeScript and Node.js.
  • Experience owning feature-level work with moderate ambiguity, including basic design of small-to-medium systems or APIs and independent decisions within feature scope.
  • Understanding of asynchronous and distributed processing concepts such as task dependencies, state transitions, retries, cancellation, idempotency, concurrency, and timeouts.
  • Experience working with durable persistence, service integrations, and modern development and deployment practices, with the ability to investigate issues using logs, metrics, and existing operational tools.
  • Experience writing effective unit and integration tests and applying basic quality, reliability, and security practices.
  • Clear communication, realistic estimation, and an ownership mindset. You can collaborate with partner teams, communicate progress and blockers, and follow work through implementation, testing, rollout, and production support.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with task and workflow orchestration concepts, including task graphs, dependencies, pluggable task types, or flexible job specifications.
  • Exposure to job lifecycle concepts such as registering work, submitting jobs, handling cancellation and timeouts, and returning status or results.
  • Exposure to workloads that run across multiple environments, including deployment, scaling, or cross-service coordination concerns.
  • Familiarity with asynchronous processing concepts such as queues, retries, polling, or worker coordination.
  • Exposure to using logs, metrics, dashboards, or other operational tools to understand workload behavior and help troubleshoot issues.

Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver backend services, APIs, workers, and shared libraries that power cloud platform capabilities.
  • Build and improve systems for orchestrating work across services, including job submission, execution tracking, status propagation, retries, cancellation, results, and operational visibility.
  • Develop reliable asynchronous and event-driven systems using queues, messaging, background workers, and durable state.
  • Work on distributed execution flows across platform services, including service-to-service communication, routing, acknowledgements, and failure recovery.
  • Build and maintain cloud-native runtime infrastructure using containers, Kubernetes, deployment automation, and related platform tooling.
  • Integrate platform services with persistence layers, event streams, REST APIs, and internal service contracts.
  • Improve production reliability through metrics, tracing, structured logging, health checks, dashboards, alerting, runbooks, and incident follow-up.
  • Participate constructively in code reviews, identify common bugs and style issues, and apply feedback to improve the quality of your work.
  • Collaborate with partner teams to turn product requirements into incremental, testable, and operable platform capabilities.
  • Use AI and modern development tools to improve engineering productivity, code quality, and delivery speed.
