About The Position

The Apple Cloud Engineering team is seeking a software engineer to build and integrate software that orchestrates workloads across highly performant and energy-efficient systems for next-generation data centers. The role focuses on hardware acceleration for machine-learning and high-performance-computing workloads, and on building and maintaining system software—including runtime libraries, frameworks, and daemons—for future data centers. The engineer will collaborate across Apple with architecture, platform-design, and software teams to adapt, tailor, and scale software on a novel compute platform, helping establish the foundation of Apple’s future cloud architecture. The position involves building and maintaining system infrastructure, developing secure and privacy-preserving software releases using container technologies, and ensuring quality through unit, integration, and performance testing.

Requirements

  • At least 4 years of experience in software development, building and managing cloud infrastructure or distributed systems.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • Strong software design, programming, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong engineering skills in Pkl or a similar configuration language, including design, testing, debugging, code review, and long-term maintainability.
  • Knowledge of operating-system architecture and low-level system components.
  • Experience with cloud orchestration engines such as Kubernetes or Nomad.
  • A track record of building, shipping, and operating production cloud services or infrastructure.
  • Experience with Linux, including systemd, cgroups, containers, socket IPC, and creating, running, and debugging user-space processes using tools such as eBPF.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with others and work cross-functionally.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Swift, Objective-C, and Apple development tools.
  • Familiarity with OCI image and runtime specifications, runc, Linux namespaces, cgroups, and overlay filesystems.

Responsibilities

  • Build and integrate software to orchestrate workloads across performant, energy-efficient systems.
  • Build and maintain system software, including runtime libraries, frameworks, and daemons.
  • Adapt, tailor, and scale software for a novel compute platform in collaboration with teams across Apple.
  • Build and maintain infrastructure for next-generation data centers.
  • Design and operate secure, privacy-preserving software releases using Docker-like containers, OCI images, runc, and Linux namespaces.
  • Build tools to manage container lifecycles across release environments.
  • Contribute to architecture discussions, code reviews, and design documents.
  • Improve automation and CI/CD across the deployment pipeline.
  • Debug and resolve production issues in distributed cloud systems.
  • Ensure software quality and agility through unit, integration, and performance tests.
  • Develop new features, maintain existing code, and fix bugs.
