AI Platform Engineer, Developer Productivity

Brain Co.•San Francisco, CA

About The Position

The AI Platform Engineer, Developer Productivity will join the team responsible for Brain Co.’s Software Factory: development environments, build systems, CI/CD, and engineering automation. The role improves how engineers develop, test, review, and ship software through developer tooling, reliable infrastructure, and AI-assisted workflows. The engineer will find and measure sources of developer friction, deliver improvements, and demonstrate their impact. Responsibilities span owning local development environments, monorepo and build infrastructure; building delivery workflows and engineering automation; improving developer experience; supporting onboarding and adoption; and operating the developer platform as a product from architecture through rollout, reliability, and iteration. The platform supports delivery across cloud, regulated, and air-gapped environments.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years building developer-facing infrastructure such as monorepo platforms, build systems, CI/CD, or internal tooling.
  • Hands-on experience with at least one modern monorepo tool, such as Nx, Bazel, Pants, Buck, or Turborepo.
  • Strong fluency with CI/CD systems at scale, including matrix design, caching strategies, secret flow, and parallelism.
  • Fluency in at least two of Go, Python, TypeScript, Rust, and Bash.
  • Experience building automated testing or code-quality workflows that engineers trust.
  • Experience shipping developer platforms adopted by real engineers.
  • Experience measuring developer friction and demonstrating clear impact from tooling, CI, build, release, or workflow improvements.
  • Strong intuition for developer experience, paved paths, and long-term maintainability.
  • Ability to own the full lifecycle from design document and MVP through hardening and adoption.
  • Ability to help teams adopt tools and migrate workflows through clear documentation and practical support.
  • Experience owning developer-facing systems with operational responsibility and uptime expectations.
  • Familiarity with observability tooling and incident response.
  • Strong fundamentals in retries, idempotency, queueing, and failure modes for reliable build and automation systems.

Nice To Haves

  • Built or integrated coding agents, automated code review, or AI-assisted testing into engineering workflows with measurable improvements in speed or quality.
  • Experience with sandboxed code execution, credential scoping, or security controls for development agents.
  • Built or significantly contributed to a remote build cache, custom build system, or hermetic build pipeline such as Bazel or Nix.
  • Led a polyrepo-to-monorepo or monorepo-to-polyrepo migration at scale.
  • Experience applying DORA, SPACE, or other developer experience metrics in practice.
  • Background in release engineering, supply-chain security such as SLSA or Sigstore, or artifact management.
  • Built internal PaaS, developer environments, or scaffolding generators.
  • Built shared quality-assurance infrastructure, such as end-to-end test harnesses, Storybook or visual-regression tooling, accessibility checks, or performance budgets across apps.
  • Open-source contributions to Nx plugins, GitHub Actions, coding-agent tooling, or related developer platforms.
  • Exposure to multi-tenant, regulated, or air-gapped deployment environments.

Responsibilities

  • Own local development environments, the monorepo, build systems, and shared tooling, making software setup, development, and testing fast and reliable as the company scales.
  • Own CI/CD, pull request workflows, code-review automation, and shared tooling for product quality assurance.
  • Integrate AI-assisted development and coding agents where they improve delivery speed and quality.
  • Discover, measure, and remove friction across the development lifecycle using developer feedback and instrumentation.
  • Shorten feedback loops, improve reliability, and demonstrate before-and-after impact from developer experience improvements.
  • Support onboarding and enablement through intuitive tooling, documentation, and practical support.
  • Guide teams through new workflows and migrations, and encourage adoption through quality rather than mandates.
  • Own the developer platform lifecycle, including architecture, implementation, rollout, reliability, and iteration based on internal user feedback.
  • Partner with engineering, Infrastructure, and Security to build a trusted developer platform.
