About The Position

Apple’s Video Engineering group is seeking a hands-on Software Engineer focused on data application development, data pipeline engineering, and database systems. The role sits at the intersection of software, data, and machine learning, building systems that support the quality of next-generation Apple products. The team bridges Algorithm, Quality Assurance, and User Studies teams and develops the applications, pipelines, and database systems used to collect, manage, and process data at scale. The engineer will develop internal data applications and tools, build pipelines for high-volume video and sensor data, and architect and maintain SQL and NoSQL databases for high-throughput workloads, metadata management, and analytics. The role also integrates with Apple internal services and APIs and involves close collaboration with algorithm, machine learning, and user study teams. The engineer owns work from design through deployment, with responsibility for reliability, scalability, and maintainability, and explores emerging technologies, including AI/LLM tools, to improve development and operations. The position is primarily on-site in Cupertino to support close collaboration with lab teams, Apple devices, and in-person user study participants.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • At least 1 year of Python experience.
  • At least 1 year of experience designing and developing data pipelines or data applications.
  • At least 1 year of experience with a major cloud platform, such as AWS or an equivalent internal platform.
  • Strong proficiency with Git, REST APIs, SQL, and NoSQL databases.
  • Experience with data modeling, schema design, and database performance optimization.
  • Familiarity with software design patterns and system design principles, including scalability, reliability, modularity, and separation of concerns.
  • Solid understanding of the software development lifecycle and engineering best practices.
  • Proficiency in prompt engineering and AI-assisted development workflows, including use for complex debugging, architectural trade-offs, or automation tasks.
  • Experience designing end-to-end systems and making trade-offs around performance, cost, and maintainability.
  • Comfort working in fast-moving, ambiguous environments with shifting priorities and tight timelines.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills for cross-functional collaboration.
  • A builder mentality, including ownership, speed, and care for the quality of shipped work.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with distributed data processing frameworks such as Spark, Airflow, or Kafka, or equivalent.
  • Familiarity with data warehousing, ETL/ELT patterns, and large-scale analytics workflows.
  • Experience building internal tooling or lightweight web interfaces such as React, Flask, or FastAPI, complementing backend or data work.
  • Curiosity and drive to explore new technologies, including AI/LLM tools, to improve workflows and solve novel problems.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop data applications and internal tools that help teams access, query, and analyze large-scale video and sensor datasets.
  • Build scalable pipelines for high-volume video and sensor data, from ingestion through storage and delivery to downstream algorithm teams.
  • Architect and maintain SQL and NoSQL database systems optimized for high-throughput workloads, metadata management, and analytics.
  • Integrate with Apple internal services and APIs, including identity systems, CI/CD platforms, and data management services.
  • Collaborate with algorithm, machine learning, and user study teams to ensure data quality, coverage, and timely delivery against testing timelines.
  • Own the domain from initial design through deployment, ensuring reliability, scalability, and maintainability.
  • Explore and adopt emerging tools, including AI/LLM tools, to improve development velocity and operational efficiency.
