Software Engineer III

Applied Materials•Santa Clara, CA

About The Position

Applied Materials is seeking a Software Engineer to design, develop, test, and maintain software for semiconductor manufacturing equipment. The role involves developing machine-control applications using object-oriented design principles and modern software architectures, and implementing control software for motion control systems, robotics and automation, laser processing modules, vision and metrology systems, and factory automation interfaces. The engineer collaborates with systems, electrical, and mechanical engineers to define equipment requirements and software architecture; develops interfaces to PLCs, motion controllers, sensors, and process hardware; and supports equipment integration, debugging, and validation. Responsibilities also include participating in design and code reviews, investigating field issues, creating technical documentation, supporting software releases, and assisting with customer installations and factory acceptance testing as required. The position calls for ownership and accountability, clear communication across engineering disciplines, and mentorship of junior engineers. Domestic and international travel of up to 10% may be required. The role is offered in Austin, Texas, or Santa Clara, California, and is relocation-eligible.
