Software Engineer- Maps Rendering

Applied Intuition•Sunnyvale, CA
•$175,000 - $230,000•Onsite

About The Position

Applied Intuition is seeking a map rendering engineer to own and maintain web-based rendering and editing tools for high-definition maps used in autonomous vehicles. The Maps team builds visualization tools used throughout autonomy-stack development, spanning long-haul commercial trucks, personal cars, mining equipment, and defense platforms, in both real-world operations and simulations. The tools visualize standard and high-definition maps, LiDAR point clouds, detailed 3D models, and other data. The role focuses on developing a 3D WebGPU map visualization and editing engine and integrating it into products across the company, including the primary map editor used by internal mapping specialists and commercial customers. The engine should support performant map visualization and editing, collaborative web editing, and other mapping workflows. The engineer will work across company 3D experiences, data schemas, APIs, and storage formats, and advise customers on effective map visualization. Applied Intuition expects full-time employees primarily to work from an office five days a week, while allowing occasional remote work and schedule flexibility.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Robotics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Graphics, or a related engineering field.
  • At least 3 years of deep experience with web-based graphics, such as WebGL, WebGPU, or three.js.
  • At least 2 years of frontend development experience, including TypeScript and a modern frontend framework such as React, Svelte, Vue, or SolidJS.
  • At least 3 years of mapping experience, preferably with high-definition maps used for autonomous driving.
  • Experience with scalable distributed systems, CI/CD workflows, version control, and cross-team collaboration using Jira and Git-based tooling.

Nice To Haves

  • At least 2 years of backend programming and systems experience with technologies such as C++, Python, Go, JavaScript, SQL, Linux, and Git.
  • At least 2 years working on performance-critical code in systems languages such as C, C++, and Rust.
  • Experience with native graphics APIs, particularly on mobile devices.
  • Experience with WebAssembly.

Responsibilities

  • Own and advance a 3D WebGPU map visualization and editing engine.
  • Integrate the engine into experiences across the company, including the primary map editor.
  • Build multiplayer web-based editing experiences.
  • Maintain performance best practices, with a target of 120 fps on modern machines for country-scale high-definition maps.
  • Integrate mapping tools from the company and industry, including map querying, map validation, and programmatic map transforms.
  • Help define data storage formats that support map visualization.
  • Collaborate with engineers to develop visualization-friendly data schemas and APIs.
  • Work across the company's 3D experiences to ensure an integrated fit and feel.
  • Advise customers on effective use of map visualization to improve product quality and advance autonomy programs.
