About The Position

Join a small, newly formed team working closely with Apple's design studio to build the UI layer for generative interfaces. The role owns the views, layouts, and APIs from which generated interfaces are built. These APIs serve both engineers and models generating interfaces in real time, so the work centers on finding the right abstractions: deciding which layout choices components should make themselves, which should be expressed as intent, and which should not be exposed. Build components that handle challenging design cases—such as constrained space, varying sizes, and content whose length and shape are unknown until runtime—without requiring each interface to be drawn by hand. Work with designers to prototype rapidly, then turn successful designs into principled, well-named APIs with a small surface area. Study how models use the APIs and refine them so good results are the default. Partner with Apple's design, AI, and UI framework teams.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of software engineering experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
  • Expert-level SwiftUI skills, including custom Layout and preferences, and a deep understanding of its layout model.
  • Designed and shipped a reusable view or component API adopted by other engineers.
  • A portfolio, shipped work, or prototypes demonstrating strong visual craft, especially typography and layout.
  • Comfort working directly with designers, from early ambiguous exploration through to a pixel-exact result.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience designing framework APIs, including naming, progressive disclosure, and defaults.
  • Experience building adaptive layouts that remain correct with content that is not known ahead of time.
  • Deep knowledge of Dynamic Type, accessibility, localization, and right-to-left layout.
  • Experience building or maintaining a design system or component library used across many product teams.
  • Experience designing APIs or schemas that a model generates against.

Responsibilities

  • Build and own the UI layer, including views, layouts, and APIs used to construct generative interfaces.
  • Find appropriate abstractions for component layout behavior and API exposure.
  • Build components that adapt to constrained space, varying sizes, and content not known in advance.
  • Prototype with designers and translate successful designs into principled, well-named APIs with a small surface area.
  • Study how models use the APIs and refine them so generated results are good by default.
  • Partner with design, AI, and UI framework teams across Apple.
