The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO), managed and operated by Associated Universities, Inc. (AUI), develops and maintains software used by the astronomy community to propose, plan, schedule, and analyze observations. The mid-level Software Engineer will join the Archive Team within the Science User Applications Group and contribute to the NRAO Science Archive, a prominent user-facing application used by astronomers worldwide. The role also offers opportunities to develop tools for current telescopes and the next generation Very Large Array (ngVLA). The initial focus is the Science Archive web application. The engineer will modernize and streamline its interface, build front-end features and components that help scientists find and work with radio astronomy data, and improve performance, accessibility, and test coverage. The position involves designing and delivering system components in collaboration with teammates and scientific users, as well as working with backend developers to design and consume APIs and improve overall system performance. Team members also maintain and upgrade existing software and develop tools supporting the Observatory's evolving observing methods. The position is based in Albuquerque, New Mexico; Socorro, New Mexico; Charlottesville, Virginia; or Green Bank, West Virginia. A remote work arrangement may be considered for well-qualified candidates. Work is typically performed in a research or development environment as part of a team of professionals in research, engineering, software development, and education. Observatory employees must be authorized to work in the United States; the Observatory presently cannot sponsor new H-1B visas for this position.
