Software Engineer, Rust

Anduril•Waltham, MA
•$167,000 - $222,000

About The Position

Anduril is seeking a Software Engineer to develop and deploy advanced software for mission-critical defense applications, with a focus on target tracking, state estimation, and situational awareness. The role works in a small team to deliver real-world technology, including high-performance Rust software for real-time systems, simulations, and decision-support tools. The engineer will influence team direction through subject-matter expertise, architect and evolve production systems, and develop algorithms for tracking, sensor fusion, and estimation. The role also involves validating technology through simulation and statistical analysis, tailoring software to customer missions, integrating capabilities throughout the software development lifecycle, and communicating technical progress to stakeholders. Applicants are asked to provide academic transcripts during the early application process or, if they choose not to share transcripts, detailed information about relevant academic performance, projects, and coursework. Unofficial online transcripts are acceptable, and non-technical information may be redacted. The stated U.S. base salary range is $167,000–$222,000. Actual offers may vary based on experience, education or training, skills, and business considerations. Competitive equity grants are included in the majority of full-time offers. Anduril also describes its full-time benefits package as comprehensive and competitive, available at little to no cost to employees.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of professional software engineering experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in mathematics, physics, engineering, or another technical field; an advanced degree is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience managing and evolving software architecture in production, including refactoring legacy systems and managing technical debt.
  • At least 2 years working on a single codebase or product, maintaining and expanding it as requirements evolved.
  • Strong understanding of software design patterns, architectural principles, and practices for building maintainable, scalable systems.
  • Proficiency in algorithm design, software development, and statistical modeling; experience with Rust and Python.
  • Solid understanding of applied mathematics, including linear algebra, optimization, probability, and stochastic processes.
  • Familiarity with big data pipelines, NoSQL databases, and efficient handling of large-scale sensor data.
  • Ability to engineer robust systems for estimation theory, adaptive filtering, controls, and complex signal environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to work across development lifecycles, from prototyping to optimizing production systems.
  • Eligible to obtain and maintain an active U.S. Secret security clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience refactoring and modernizing Rust codebases in production environments.
  • Track record of architectural decision-making and technical leadership on long-lived projects.
  • Contributions to open-source Rust projects or the broader Rust ecosystem.
  • Experience with concurrent and parallel programming patterns in Rust.
  • Experience in state estimation, including Bayesian filtering, sensor fusion, and recursive estimation techniques.
  • Machine-learning background applied to target tracking and recognition, including clustering, classification, and anomaly detection.
  • Knowledge of target-tracking techniques such as Kalman filters, particle filters, and multi-target tracking algorithms (e.g., JPDA, MHT, or PHD filters).
  • Knowledge of signal-processing techniques for interpreting diverse sensor data, such as radar, lidar, and EO/IR.

Responsibilities

  • Define and influence the direction of a small team using expertise in target tracking and state estimation.
  • Architect, maintain, and evolve complex software systems, including refactoring codebases to improve performance, maintainability, and scalability.
  • Prototype and deploy algorithms for tracking, multi-sensor data fusion, and state estimation in iterative development environments.
  • Develop high-performance Rust software for real-time systems, simulations, and decision-support tools.
  • Design and implement filters, estimators, and probabilistic reasoning systems to derive actionable insights from noisy, ambiguous, or incomplete sensor data.
  • Apply software design patterns and architectural best practices to manage technical debt and guide production-system evolution.
  • Analyze system performance with high-fidelity simulations, modeling tools, and statistical techniques.
  • Customize algorithms and software for mission-critical customer use cases, including real-time tracking and sensor fusion.
  • Integrate tracking and estimation technologies across the software lifecycle, from requirements definition through testing and optimization.
  • Translate technical progress into clear, actionable insights for colleagues and end users.

Benefits

  • Competitive equity grants are included in the majority of full-time offers.
  • Comprehensive, competitive benefits package available at little to no cost to employees.
