Software Engineer - Radar

MatrixSpace•Burlington, MA

About The Position

MatrixSpace is seeking a Radar Software Engineer to improve radar performance through real-world data, experiments, and software. The role uses experimental data to understand system behavior, designs experiments to measure and explain that behavior, and translates findings into improvements to signal-processing and state-estimation algorithms. MatrixSpace develops AI-enabled sensing solutions combining low-SWaP-C radar technology, RF sensing, and real-time edge processing. The engineer develops and maintains C++ software for radar system components, including signal processing, detection, tracking, and control. The work involves building low-latency, deterministic systems that meet strict timing and reliability requirements; architecting clear, testable, maintainable components; understanding how sensors and embedded systems affect radar performance; debugging across hardware and software boundaries; and supporting software integration and testing in laboratory and field environments. The position requires working directly or indirectly with the U.S. Government in restricted environments. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States without employer sponsorship and may be required to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance in the future. Occasional travel of less than 10% is required.

Requirements

  • 5–7 years of relevant work experience.
  • Strong proficiency in C++.
  • Deep understanding of real-time constraints, including latency, determinism, scheduling, and concurrency.
  • Ability to design experiments, define meaningful metrics, and use data to draw clear conclusions.
  • Ability to understand how hardware, software, and algorithms work together to produce results in the field.
  • Experience with multidimensional data analysis.
  • Data-driven approach to problem-solving.
  • Understanding of good object-oriented software design practices.
  • Ability to communicate technical ideas and results clearly, verbally and in writing.
  • Degree in computer science, electrical engineering, robotics, or a related engineering field.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States without employer sponsorship.
  • May be required to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance in the future.

Nice To Haves

  • Understanding of and/or hands-on experience with signal processing and/or RF sensor or communication systems.
  • Experience with first-principles-based modeling and simulation to augment system data during issue investigation and/or feature development.
  • Experience using Modern C++ (C++11 or later).
  • Curiosity about how systems work and interest in investigating unexpected system behavior.
  • Interest in radar technology and the physics behind what the system measures.
  • Persistence in investigating difficult problems and following evidence.
  • Thrives in a collaborative team environment and values giving and receiving constructive feedback.

Responsibilities

  • Use real radar data to characterize system performance and translate insights into algorithm tuning, selection, and development.
  • Develop and maintain C++ software for radar system components, including signal processing, detection, tracking, and control.
  • Develop low-latency, deterministic systems that meet strict timing and reliability requirements.
  • Architect software components with an emphasis on clarity, testability, and maintainability.
  • Use knowledge of sensors and embedded systems to understand cause-and-effect relationships in radar performance.
  • Debug complex issues across hardware and software boundaries.
  • Support integration and testing of radar software in laboratory and field environments.
  • Design experiments, define meaningful metrics, and use data to draw conclusions about system behavior.
