Radar Engineer

SAIC•Denver, CO
•Onsite

About The Position

SAIC is seeking a Radar Engineer to join its National Security and Space Sector (NSS) in Aurora, Colorado. The role supports a joint Intelligence Community (IC) and Department of Defense (DoD) program, providing specialized space and counter-space engineering, scientific, and analytical services. The engineer will work with a collaborative team of U.S. Government civilians and contractors to solve applied technical problems and develop usable solutions for space-related capabilities and threats. The position focuses on assessing ground- and space-based radar systems, radar phenomenology, target signatures, and radar signal-processing techniques. Work includes specialized technical studies, physics-based modeling and simulation, analysis and technical trades, and providing actionable assessments and recommendations to program managers and satellite owner/operators. The engineer will also develop in-depth knowledge of national security and foreign space systems, counter-space threats, and space surveillance and identification, while engaging with government and contractor stakeholders and supporting technical and programmatic reviews.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in physics or engineering and at least 9 years of direct experience analyzing and interpreting radar systems and data, or at least 7 years with a master’s degree.
  • Proven analytic problem-solving experience involving exploitation of radar data of space objects, including familiarity with radar data products, signal-processing techniques, and scattering phenomenology.
  • Understanding of astrodynamics fundamentals and space systems.
  • Fluency in specialized software tools or programming languages relevant to space systems, such as MATLAB, Python, C++, or similar.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and in groups, proactively initiate work, and operate in dynamic and incompletely defined environments.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including conveying technical concepts, results, and summaries to internal and external customers and stakeholders with diverse technical backgrounds.
  • Must have TS/SCI clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Polygraph clearance preferred.
  • Understanding of the technical and operational concepts of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar (ISAR).
  • Familiarity with evaluating and using vendor-provided modeling products such as HFSS, CST, and X-Patch.
  • Experience with IC and/or DoD space system development, acquisition, or operations.
  • Ability to conceptualize, synthesize, analyze, and assess ground- and space-based radar system performance, radar phenomenology, target signatures, and radar signal-processing techniques.
  • Motivation to solve problems and develop a range of solutions rather than focus on system development.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct specialized technical studies of radar systems, targets, and data products, providing assessments and actionable solutions to program managers or satellite owner/operators.
  • Lead and participate in complex physics-based modeling, simulation, and analysis, and conduct technical trades.
  • Develop and maintain in-depth knowledge of U.S. national security space, foreign space, counter-space threats, and space surveillance and identification.
  • Represent the customer in Government and contractor meetings and attend programmatic and technical reviews, such as PMR, PDR, and CDR, to provide technical recommendations and risk assessments.
  • Frequently interact with program managers, SETAs, FFRDCs, and external stakeholders.
  • Develop productive relationships with Program Office, prime and subcontract counterparts, functional IC or DoD counterparts, and other subject matter experts.
  • Apply technical standards, principles, theories, concepts, and techniques.
