Software Engineer, Network Infrastructure

Meta•Menlo Park, CA
•$183,997 - $257,000

About The Position

Meta is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to design, build, and operate software systems for its global network infrastructure. The role focuses on Meta Compute’s cloud-native host networking platform, including Kubernetes networking, network virtualization, load balancing and service connectivity, and distributed firewalling and policy enforcement. The engineer will lead technical direction and production delivery, working across compute, storage, platform, security, and hardware/fabric teams. The position also involves evaluating and contributing to open-source building blocks and ensuring solutions remain maintainable and operable at hyperscale.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, a relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 10+ years of software development experience in networking or infrastructure systems, or a Ph.D. with 4+ years of experience in a relevant technical area.
  • 4+ years of proven experience designing and shipping production networking dataplane/control-plane systems, such as host networking, L4/L7 load balancing, NAT/conntrack, firewalls/policy, or network virtualization.
  • Hands-on production Kubernetes networking experience, such as CNI, Services, NetworkPolicy/policy models, or service connectivity/load-balancing integration.
  • Proficiency in C/C++ and at least one scripting language, such as Python or shell scripting.
  • Experience developing and automating test suites.
  • Demonstrated experience working across disciplines to align on technical decisions and deliver integrated solutions.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience collaborating with hardware and ASIC design teams, contributing to hardware specifications, co-designing hardware-software interfaces, and influencing silicon feature sets based on software requirements.
  • Expertise in high-performance networking frameworks and techniques, such as DPDK, eBPF/XDP, AF_XDP, io_uring, kernel bypass, zero-copy I/O, and RDMA/RoCEv2.
  • Direct experience with DPU SoC/SmartNIC platforms.
  • Experience building or contributing to Kubernetes operators, controllers, or device plugins that manage hardware-accelerated networking or storage resources.
  • Familiarity with Linux networking internals, such as the netdev subsystem, TC/iptables/nftables, network namespace isolation, traffic shaping, and kernel driver development.
  • Experience in hyperscale or cloud-provider environments.

Responsibilities

  • Architect and lead delivery of Meta Compute’s cloud-native host networking platform, owning technical direction from design through production rollout.
  • Build and modernize Kubernetes networking features integrated with Meta’s host networking stack, including dataplane integration, operability, and scaling.
  • Design and implement networking primitives for network virtualization, load balancing and service connectivity, and distributed firewalling and policy enforcement.
  • Define milestones, de-risk technical choices early, and deliver iterative production increments.
  • Align cross-functional partners across compute, storage, platform, security, and hardware/fabric; own interfaces, contracts, and end-to-end outcomes.
  • Evaluate open-source building blocks, contribute improvements where needed, and support long-term maintainability and operability.
