Software Engineer - NEO Reliability

1XSan Carlos, CA
Onsite

About The Position

1X is building humanoid robots for home use, aiming to automate chores and tasks to give people back their time. This involves solving challenges in robotics, AI, and manufacturing simultaneously, at scale, and in a safe form factor for family environments. The company has been developing these robots since 2014 and is now focused on shipping its flagship home robot, NEO. The role is critical for scaling the company from hundreds to tens of thousands of robots, ensuring customer trust and enabling engineers to move quickly. The NEO Reliability team is responsible for the reliability and testing plan for all software systems on and interacting with the robot. This includes front-end, back-end, cloud, mobile, on-robot services, and the embedded stack. Their work encompasses hardware-in-the-loop testing, end-to-end regression, incident management, on-call duties, observability, release gating, and defining Service Level Objectives (SLOs) for reliability. The team ensures that robot software is trustworthy at fleet scale, from the initial developer tests to the robot's operation in a user's home.

Requirements

  • Strong software engineering background with depth in at least one stack layer (cloud and backend, systems, or embedded) and the ability to reason across others.
  • Experience building test and reliability infrastructure, or distributed systems at scale (e.g., APIs, real-time data pipelines, monitoring, incident management).
  • Strong DevOps and Linux skills, including CI/CD and infrastructure as code.
  • Fluency in Python and at least one systems language.
  • Strong statistical and probabilistic skills.
  • Allergy to the sunk cost fallacy.
  • Experience building from zero to one and then from one to production.

Nice To Haves

  • SRE practices such as SLOs and error budgets.
  • Fleet observability and monitoring.
  • HIL (Hardware-in-the-Loop) and on-robot testing.
  • Using simulation as a test target.
  • Experience quantifying physical system behavior (e.g., motion, sensor, and health telemetry).
  • Experience across adjacent areas like IoT, HPC, cloud, or embedded.
  • Comfort at the boundary between hardware and software, including real-time and robotics constraints.

Responsibilities

  • Own software reliability as a product.
  • Drive reliability practices across the full stack, from web and cloud through mobile, on-robot services, and embedded.
  • Build and own parts of an integrated testing package that checks the system end-to-end, from developer tests to real robot movement.
  • Ensure customers can trust their robots as the company scales.
  • Enable engineers to move fast through robust reliability practices.
  • Deliver an integrated testing package covering all stack layers (web, cloud, mobile, on-robot services, embedded) and deepen reliability standards over time.
  • Own end-to-end testing from developer tests to robot movement, quantifying movement, actions, and robot health.
  • Triage reliability issues, identify problem boundaries, and route them to the appropriate software or hardware teams.
  • Set the standard for software reliability best practices across the organization for internal teams and external customers.
  • Treat sensing, telemetry, and logging as first-class components of reliability.
  • Treat reliability as a product with real users, owning work end-to-end and shipping proactively.
  • Communicate clearly with internal and external stakeholders, transforming data into actionable findings, presenting them to stakeholder groups, and elevating the performance of those around you.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • Generous paid time off, company holidays, and parental leave
  • 401(k) plan with company match (100% on the first 3% of contributions, 50% on the next 2%)
  • Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) and Health Savings Accounts (HSA) options
  • Commuter benefits (transit and parking)
  • Short-term and long-term disability, and life insurance
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP) for mental health, financial, and personal support
  • Onsite snacks and catered lunches
