Software Engineer, Money Platform

OpenRouter
•$215,000 - $285,000

About The Position

OpenRouter is hiring its first engineer to envision, build, and own the financial platform behind its AI inference gateway, marketplace, and agentic products. The platform will handle metering, pricing, invoicing, credits, payments, payouts, and the financial ledger, while enabling flexible pricing and contract models for the business. The role owns the systems that connect usage to revenue, including financial data architecture, billing and collections, payment processing, provider settlements, and reconciliation. It also partners with Provider, Trust & Safety, Sales, Customer Success, and Finance teams to support accurate usage attribution, financial controls, and operational workflows. Correctness, idempotency, auditability, anomaly detection, and least-privilege access are core expectations.

Requirements

  • 5+ years building production financial systems such as billing, payments, ledgers, or revenue infrastructure at a fintech or usage-based SaaS company.
  • Deep fluency in money-correctness practices, including idempotency, double-entry accounting, exactly-once event processing, reconciliation, and safe migrations of financial data.
  • Hands-on experience with Stripe or similar payment processors and a billing or invoicing platform, including contract, subscription, and usage-based models.
  • Strong TypeScript and SQL skills.
  • Comfort working with Postgres and analytical data stores such as ClickHouse at high event volume.
  • Working knowledge of accounting, including accounts receivable/payable, revenue recognition, deferred revenue, and month-end close.
  • Ability to collaborate across teams and translate complex business requests into clean systems.
  • High agency and an AI-forward approach, including daily use of coding agents and interest in automating manual finance operations.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience building usage-based, hybrid, or seat-based billing at scale.
  • Experience with streaming data pipelines such as Dataflow, Spanner, or Kafka for metering.
  • Experience with payment fraud and risk systems such as Stripe Radar.
  • Experience with multi-currency, sales tax/VAT, or global payment methods.
  • Experience preparing financial systems for an audit.
  • Existing OpenRouter user or experience building projects in AI tooling.

Responsibilities

  • Build flexible pricing and contract capabilities, including commitments, BYOK pricing, overages, platform fees, and per-seat pricing, so Sales and Customer Success can test deals without engineering support.
  • Automate quote-to-cash by converting signed contracts into provisioned, correctly billed customers, supporting separate POC and production flows, onboarding credit transfers, and self-service credit grants.
  • Establish the financial source of truth for fees, plans, and entitlements, along with data architecture for internal and customer reporting.
  • Ensure every completed request is metered, priced, and recorded exactly once across streaming spend tracking and usage records; reconcile served usage against charges.
  • Own billing, payments, and collections, including invoicing, prepaid credits, automatic top-ups, refunds, tax/VAT, purchase orders, spend-against-commitment tracking, Stripe integration, failed-payment recovery, and overdue-invoice collections.
  • Build a double-entry ledger as the financial system of record and automate reconciliation across Postgres, Stripe, billing, and usage data.
  • Own provider settlements and payables, and provide Finance with close-ready numbers.
  • Partner with the Provider team on usage tracking, per-generation cost attribution, and provider pricing and discounts.
  • Partner with Trust & Safety on payment fraud and abuse prevention.
  • Implement financial controls, including transaction idempotency, anomaly detection, auditability, and least-privilege access for finance tools.
