Software Engineer, Medical Imaging

Neuralink•Austin, TX
•Onsite

About The Position

Neuralink is developing devices that create a bi-directional interface with the brain, aiming to restore movement to the paralyzed, sight to the blind, and transform human interaction with the digital world. The Surgery Engineering team focuses on custom hardware and processes for neurosurgical procedures, excluding the R1 Robot and Operator Station. Their scope covers the entire surgical process, including patient positioning, incision management, craniectomy, precise implant placement, thread management during robot-assisted insertion, surgical site irrigation, implant installation, and closure. They also manage safe explantation and upgrade procedures, and provide mechanical engineering support to other teams like animal care, histology, and BCI.

Requirements

  • Evidence of exceptional ability in engineering or computer science.
  • Proven track record of shipping software with real-world impact.
  • Understanding of how systems work at a fundamental level.
  • Practical proficiency in linear algebra.
  • Experience coding in Python, Rust, and/or, JavaScript.
  • Experience manipulating and visualizing 3D objects (e.g., game development, VR/AR, medical imaging).
  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field (Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, etc.) OR equivalent practical experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with medical imaging formats, such as DICOM and NIfTI.
  • Experience working with protected health information.
  • Knowledge of container management and orchestration.
  • Experience with infrastructure development.

Responsibilities

  • Work with engineers and clinicians to develop tools for rapid and precise placement of the Neuralink implant and electrodes relative to functional imaging targets (e.g., fMRI).
  • Own the end-to-end pipeline of medical imaging data at Neuralink, from ingestion to fusion of different imaging techniques, and navigation in real-world patient coordinates during surgery.
  • Import and manipulate 3D medical imaging datasets.
  • Build and deploy applications to manage large amounts of medical image data.
  • Build and deploy a Graphical User Interface for engineers and clinicians to place electrode targets based on pre-operative imaging.
  • Develop a system to pass pre-operative medical images to the surgical robot.
  • Interface with intraoperative hardware for patient and tool tracking.
