About The Position

Join Apple's iCloud Platform team as a software engineering intern, helping build privacy-preserving cloud infrastructure for applications and experiences used by millions of people. As part of the Private Cloud Compute Platform Data Plane team, you will help design, build, and improve distributed systems at the core of Apple's privacy-preserving cloud compute infrastructure. You will work with experienced engineers and collaborate with Privacy, Security, and other partner teams, with a focus on strong privacy guarantees. You will own a well-scoped project and contribute code that ships during the internship, gaining hands-on experience with distributed systems, scalability, and privacy-focused engineering. The work may involve technologies such as Swift, anonymized networking, and hardened operating systems. The internship is based full time in London, UK, with five workdays per week and three days onsite at the office. You must remain in full-time university education or be on a sandwich year for the duration of the internship. The role includes focused coding, pairing, and design work, as well as collaboration with colleagues, including teams in the US.

  • Proficiency in at least one high-level programming language.
  • Strong problem-solving and debugging skills, and willingness to learn new technologies.
  • Familiarity with version control and collaborative development tools such as GitHub, and AI tools such as Claude.
  • Experience with Unix-like operating systems such as macOS or Linux.
  • Good organisational and communication skills.
  • Must be in full-time education at university or on a sandwich year for the duration of the internship.

  • Experience building or contributing to services through projects, open source, or prior internships.
  • Familiarity with application-layer protocols and API design, especially protobuf and gRPC or HTTP REST.
  • Interest in or understanding of security techniques such as certificates, software signing, and attestation.
  • Interest in security and privacy engineering in distributed systems.
  • A self-starter comfortable with new technology and evolving requirements who is also a collaborative teammate.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and test features for services that make up the cloud compute platform.
  • Work with a team developing new architecture and learn to reason about distributed-systems failure modes.
  • Write comprehensive unit, integration, and system tests.
  • Contribute through small, regular changes and code review.
  • Work with Privacy, Security, and other cross-functional partner teams.
  • Participate in design discussions and clarify evolving requirements.
