Software Engineer III - Liberty Robotics

LMI TechnologiesDexter, MI
Onsite

About The Position

Liberty Robotics provides 3D volumetric vision guidance systems for robot applications, enhancing manufacturing, material/part handling, and logistics operations. The company is seeking a highly qualified Software Engineer III to join its core Technology Research team. This role is for an analytical and technically mature individual contributor with end-to-end software ownership, bridging the gap between high-level mathematical research and production-grade code. The engineer will deploy advanced algorithmic concepts from simulation to manufacturing floor environments. Liberty Robotics is part of LMI Technologies, recognized as one of Canada’s Best Workplaces.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, Mathematics, or a related technical field.
  • Solid foundational understanding of linear algebra, geometry, coordinate systems, and rigid-body transformations.
  • Hands-on experience with 3D computer vision and perception algorithms, including point cloud processing, 3D registration, pose estimation, object detection, object fitting, reconstruction, and related techniques.
  • Experience with 2D image processing and computer vision methods, including image filtering, feature extraction, segmentation, object detection, image registration, and morphological operations.
  • Industry experience developing software, algorithms, or perception systems for real-world applications.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to develop and validate algorithms.
  • Demonstrated ability to write efficient, maintainable, and production-quality software in C++ and/or Python.
  • Willingness to travel to customer and OEM installation sites (approximately 1 week out of 10) to perform live field validations on active machinery.
  • Extensive career background comprising 5 to 10 years of focused technical expertise in 3D perception and image processing stacks.

Nice To Haves

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, Mathematics, or a related field.
  • Professional background within the Logistics or Automotive industry.
  • Understanding of camera and imaging systems, including camera calibration, pinhole camera models, stereo vision, and depth sensing technologies.
  • Background in linear and nonlinear optimization, with practical experience applying optimization techniques to computer vision, robotics, or perception problems.
  • Knowledge of machine learning and deep learning techniques, including CNNs, Transformers, foundation models, multimodal learning, pre-training, fine-tuning, and model deployment, paired with the ability to evaluate the strengths and limitations of modern AI approaches.
  • GPU programming experience (e.g., CUDA, OpenCL, or related frameworks) is a plus.
  • Familiarity with software development best practices, including version control, testing, code reviews, and continuous integration.
  • Candidates located in, or willing to relocate to, the Ann Arbor, Michigan area are preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Formulate, implement, and validate advanced 2D and 3D computer vision pipelines from mathematical first principles.
  • Port, optimize, and deploy production-quality code that interfaces with physical depth sensors, ensuring real-time control loops remain deterministic and lag-free.
  • Evaluate system architectures to determine when to leverage classical image processing workflows versus modern deep learning models to eliminate operational latencies.
  • Champion software development best practices by leading meticulous peer code reviews, refactoring legacy components, and managing complex multi-codebase integrations.
  • Collaboratively troubleshoot and fine-tune vision pipelines live on physical hardware and prototype configurations.
