About The Position

Liberty Robotics is seeking an analytical and technically mature Software Engineer III for its core Technology Research team. The role is a high-visibility individual-contributor position with end-to-end software ownership, working alongside researchers and engineers to develop 3D volumetric vision guidance systems for industrial robotics applications. The engineer will bridge mathematical research and production software by taking algorithmic concepts from simulation through deployment on manufacturing floors. The work includes developing and validating 2D and 3D computer vision pipelines, interfacing with physical depth sensors, maintaining deterministic real-time control loops, evaluating classical image processing and deep learning approaches, and validating vision systems on physical hardware and prototypes. The position is hybrid, with at least three days per week in the office in Dexter, Michigan. Customer and OEM site travel for live field validation is approximately one week out of ten. Relocation assistance and immigration sponsorship are not available.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, Mathematics, or a related technical field.
  • Solid foundational understanding of linear algebra, geometry, coordinate systems, and rigid-body transformations.
  • Hands-on experience with 3D computer vision and perception algorithms, including point cloud processing, 3D registration, pose estimation, object detection, object fitting, and reconstruction.
  • Experience with 2D image processing and computer vision methods, including image filtering, feature extraction, segmentation, object detection, image registration, and morphological operations.
  • Industry experience developing software, algorithms, or perception systems for real-world applications.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to develop and validate algorithms.
  • Demonstrated ability to write efficient, maintainable, production-quality software in C++ and/or Python.
  • Willingness to travel to customer and OEM installation sites for field validations.
  • Five to ten years of focused technical expertise in 3D perception and image processing stacks.

Nice To Haves

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, Mathematics, or a related field.
  • Professional background in the logistics or automotive industry.
  • Understanding of camera and imaging systems, including camera calibration, pinhole camera models, stereo vision, and depth sensing technologies.
  • Background in linear and nonlinear optimization, with practical experience applying optimization techniques to computer vision, robotics, or perception problems.
  • Knowledge of machine learning and deep learning, including CNNs, Transformers, foundation models, multimodal learning, pre-training, fine-tuning, and model deployment, and the ability to evaluate the strengths and limitations of modern AI approaches.
  • GPU programming experience, such as CUDA, OpenCL, or related frameworks.
  • Familiarity with software development best practices, including version control, testing, code reviews, and continuous integration.
  • Located in, or willing to relocate to, the Ann Arbor, Michigan area.

Responsibilities

  • Formulate, implement, and validate advanced 2D and 3D computer vision pipelines from mathematical first principles.
  • Port, optimize, and deploy production-quality code that interfaces with physical depth sensors and supports deterministic, low-latency real-time control loops.
  • Evaluate system architectures and choose appropriately between classical image processing workflows and modern deep learning models.
  • Lead peer code reviews, refactor legacy components, and manage complex integrations across multiple codebases.
  • Collaboratively troubleshoot and fine-tune vision pipelines on physical hardware and prototype configurations.
  • Travel to customer and OEM installation sites for live validation on active machinery, approximately one week out of ten.
