Software Engineer II - TeraWave

Blue Origin•Cupertino, WA

About The Position

Blue Origin is seeking a Software Engineer to join the TeraWave Point of Presence (PoP) development team. TeraWave is a satellite communications network designed to deliver symmetrical data speeds of up to 6 Tbps globally, serving enterprise, data center, and government users that require reliable connectivity for critical operations. The PoP team develops high-performance, fast-path software for the network edge, operating at the intersection of the Linux kernel and user-space networking. The role focuses on systems programming, high-performance packet processing, and carrier-grade networking software. The engineer will build and optimize software for microsecond-level performance and mission-critical reliability, helping the TeraWave constellation deliver global connectivity.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Expert-level proficiency in Rust, C, or C++.
  • Experience with Linux systems programming, including threading, memory management, and interrupt handling.
  • Solid understanding of the OSI model, TCP/IP stack, and Ethernet switching fundamentals.

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on experience with DPDK (Data Plane Development Kit) or VPP (Vector Packet Processing).
  • Knowledge of eBPF, XDP, or Linux kernel networking internals.
  • Understanding of BGP, EVPN, and Segment Routing (SRv6).
  • Experience with CPU pinning, NUMA awareness, and cache-line optimization techniques.
  • Experience with containerized networking, including Kubernetes CNI and DPDK-in-Docker deployments.
  • Background in space systems, satellite communications, or telecommunications networking.

Responsibilities

  • Develop high-performance packet-processing applications in C/C++ using DPDK and FD.io VPP for the TeraWave PoP.
  • Profile and optimize software for line-rate performance at 100G/400G speeds while minimizing latency and jitter.
  • Implement and integrate IP routing protocols, including BGP, OSPF, and IS-IS, and tunneling encapsulation headers, including SRv6, MPLS, and GRE.
  • Develop drivers and software interfaces for hardware accelerators, SmartNICs, and FPGA-offload engines supporting the TeraWave dataplane.
  • Conduct continuous performance benchmarking and optimize packet-forwarding pipelines.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Basic and supplemental life insurance.
  • Paid parental leave.
  • Short- and long-term disability insurance.
  • 401(k) with company match of up to 5%.
  • Education Support Program.
  • Stock options for regular employees working at least 20 hours per week.
  • Paid time off of up to four weeks per year based on weekly scheduled hours.
  • Up to 14 company-paid holidays.
  • Depending on role type and job level, employees may be eligible for benefits and bonuses based on individual contributions or other factors; amounts and eligibility are not guaranteed.
